Erm, dont their shells get bigger all over as they age?  In which case the repair will hinder that.

Yes I found that site too, that repair is to one small area of shell.  BUT I believe the shell grows out from each patterned part, IE its not only the edge of the shell that grows, but each part of the pattern.  So covering the shell with a large patch will hinder that shell growth.  Plus, I think the shell needs to be able to breathe.  My Blue Peter viewing of many years ago might be paying off.

I checked many sites, all followed the same procedure, seems a standard repair for most size holes, the shell may repair itself in time and growth of the shell is very slow, this is one of the biggest tortoises I have seen here in Turkey and can assume it is nearly fully grown anyway.
The repair is done in small patchwork and there is no shell to breathe under most of it as it was a big hole, it certainly would have died soon left open to the elements.
