General review of 2010 -so far
« on: June 25, 2010, 23:09:52 PM »
Just got back and thought I would share our thoughts re the food this year.

Food has gone up but the clay dishes/ sizzlers are still good value - 13 - 15ytl on average (plus chips or rice if you want either).

They 'premium' meals - steaks, lamb shanks etc seem to have gone up most. 25 - 30ytl in most of the places we ate.

One moan we had is that everything is the same wherever we went. Rice and/or chips get boring after a while.

We had some good meals and some not so good. In general we found that any meal that was not a 'sizzler' or 'clay dish just wasn't hot enough but this has been a gripe of ours for a few years now.

I had one poor meal but I'm not prepared to name and shame as it was the first time we have eaten and that particular place and I have seen many good reviews - so maybe an off night. Bringing me cold gravy for my steak was a little off putting though - you know when it solidifies? Yuk!

Most consistently good and reasonably priced (including Efes at 3.5ytl) in Calis was our old friend Guven's. Well done Carol and Guven - cracked it again I think :)

Up Koca Calis way - Sands Bar offers a lovely beach area with great sunbeds and super outdoor furniture. Max tries very hard to please and other than a couple of misunderstandings with the orders the food was good. One slight problem with food temperature on the night of the first England game but to be honest it was very busy and they struggled to cope a little. One thing I did suggest though is that he gets prices put on his menus. Nothing worse to me than having to ask how much things are - makes you look a bit 'tight' I think ;)

Tuborg draft and Efes bottles 4 ytl.

Other place we ate - Mutlu's - good standard but they tend to try too hard to please. Small 'Meze on the house' and 'fruit on the house' is actually quite the norm in a few places. Efes 4 ytl.

Sunset Restaurant ( on the front) - nice but quite expensive. Efes still 4ytl though.

Birlik - we had a great take-away one night when it rained. Efes 4ytl.

Dephnies Pension - nice and simple 'home cooking' and reasonable prices. Efes also 3.5 here as well :)

Genis Restaurant in Fethyie ( right opposite where the Letoonia  boat docks) - good food again and Efes 4ytl. Best toilets in the whole of Calis and Fethiye we think :)

Dearest Efes (we did negotiate a slight discount though)- B52 - Efes 6ytl and Gin 9.5 :o

All in all a fair two weeks eating out but the best meal by far was done on our gas barbecue - lamb steaks, chicken legs and salad - worked out about 30ytl for 4 people but with drinks on top ;)

Crate of 24 Efes from Melisa's - 51ytl delivered:D

Sorted ;)

Oops - forgot the Nil! Can't really fault it. Had a good meal there again and the place is welcoming as well. Can't remember the price of Efes but I guess it might be 4 ytl ;)

Legless and Maggie seem to be regulars and took us one night. The old git in me didn't really like it that much to be honest ;)

One strange thing I find with myself is while I have some real pet hates when it comes to restaurants (like clear glass plates - sort it out Meeting Point!!) - I really don't mind the chips/rice/salad trinity as much as I have often stated on CBF. It does lack any imagination whatsoever but so what. What really pees me off with it, is the fact that in most meals in most restaurants, it takes up more than half the plate. That's 50%+ of something you are paying for but didn't even order.

Rest easy Keith we were in the Meeting Point a few days ago and they have nice white crockery with the restaurant name printed on the plate rims.Very good meal we had off the plates accompanied by the best of attention from Ahmet.

If you eat at some place, like, say, Georges, they bring  the rice and chips on a separate small side plate.
