New Alcohol Rules
« on: January 14, 2011, 08:02:49 AM »
Here is an extract from the Daily Hurriyet:

"Giving out free alcoholic drinks as a gift, prize, sample or promotion will be banned under the new regulation, though there is no provision affecting whether consumers can order alcohol to be delivered to their home."

It looks like my win of the Jack Daniel's at the FIG Christmas Fayre will go down in history as the last of its kind.

This bit will be a nightmare for bars that are not in 'coastal zones' - so if a bar is not in 'coastal zone' and on a highway 'state route' then the bar will not be able to sell alcohol. The question is - where do coastal zones' end and what designates a 'state route?

The sale of alcohol will be banned at municipality-owned establishments and along roads designated as highways and state routes in the traffic code, officials said. Answering questions raised by the public, they said there was no provision in the regulation regarding alcohol sales at venues in coastal zones.

Next they will want us to look at our holiday photos instead of flying to Turkey:(

People with alcohol problems tend not to obtain it by buying raffle tickets and hoping for the best. Yet another totally pointless and ridiculous law - sort out the estate cons, that would actually make a difference to something!

It's getting worse by the month, you'd think Mr Erdogan would be pleased at the amount of revenue tourism brings to Turkey but take away the right to have a beer or two then people will spend their hard earned cash in some other country.
How are they going to state where coastal begins and ends?  Will we be be able to have a glass of wine on the prom but not over the bridge?  Or on the marina at Fethyie but not in Pataspur?
Also, how many times will we see this law broken?  Even now you shouldn't be able to buy alcohol in the lokantas on the Gunlukbasi Road but they openly sell it and no one bats an eye.  Who will be in trouble with the alcohol police?  The owners or those of us enjoying a tipple?
You hit the nail on the head Eric, if this goes ahead it's bye bye tourism in Turkey.

You will find that most income from sale of booze is not from tourists but from locals. raki is so ingrained into Turkish culture that you have as much chance of banning ith then removing AtaTurks picture of the money.
Another interesting fact, Konya, known as the most religious and conservative city in Turkey has the highest alcohol consumption rate. Although I have had to go there several times over the last month, I havent seen anyone falling around drunk in the city.
