It just seems odd to me to lay him to rest in accordance with his beliefs (i.e. so quickly), unlike many of the 2900+ who had no chance of even being found, let alone having the funeral they would have chosen.

I doubt it was done with his thoughts in mind one way or another, a quick burial at sea means no body, no bones, no future pilgrim site's and no relics, total obliteration, all very neat and tidy.

But there'e not much you can do about the others - just let them enjoy their fantasies.

Surely it would be a quite ridiculous thing to do, to create one of the biggest stories in American history, only for the dead guy to turn up on video next week holding up that day's newspaper? I can't see why they would risk that amount of embarrassment for a feel good tale.

Sorry Scun, but this don't feel good to me. I'm just glad it wasn't the SAS who found him. I might sound selfish, but who do you think will cop the reprisals, eh?

I seem to have been misconstrued here. I do believe that Bin Laden is dead. But the "absence" of a body will allow his fanatical supporters, rightly or wrongly, to at least claim that he has not been killed. They will also dismiss the DNA "evidence" out of hand.
