Choosing Your Holiday Hospital

If you have the misfortune to be taken ill when on holiday where you should you go for treatment?

When this happened to me recently I had plenty of chance to talk to my insurance company doctor of the repatriation journey home. He had many years of experience all over the world in this kind of work. He said that many of the holiday-makers he had to attend assumed the best hospital they could go to would be a private one - especially since it would be the insurance company that would pay for this. However, in his view, in most countries private hospitals are fine for fairly simple ailments, broken bones and the like, but for really serious stuff (like heart and lung problems) you are usually better off in state hospitals. These usually have a broader range of expensive modern technologies and specialist staff - just like the UK. On the other hand a number of newly founded private hospitals in tourist areas have a business plan of not making large investments in staff and technology but instead giving backhanders to local hotels provided they direct any sick guests immediately to the private hospital. Since patients seldom want to change hospitals once they are settled into a bed the private hospital is then assured of the insurance payments. (Fortunately the private hospital caring for me - Ahu Hetman in Marmaris - was an exception to this and the doctor's previous dealings with it had proved very satisfactory).

So, although many Brits abroad seem to assume that private = better, you might be better off in a state hospital if you don't know your way around the medical services of your resort..

Someone, somewhere, sometime said to me that the trick was not in finding a good hospital but a good doctor/ surgeon in the field of medicine you require.
I agree but in times of need that is not an easy thing to do, of course.

Turkey has "University" Hospitals around the country that specialise in whatever it is they specialise in - so depending on your ailment the appropriate University hospital would be the place to go in Turkey.

I understand these are first rate  :)

The new Esnaf hospital is likely to be impressive and plans to have a dedicated cancer ward with specialist treatment

Nichola. I require a good surgeon for a bladder problem, would you know how to find a university hospital that would deal with this, I would be very grateful. At the moment I have emailed a hospital in Izmir but really I don't know if this would be a good hospital or not. Thank you for any replies.

Dependent on the problem try:

1. Urology

http://esru.uroweb.org/countries-pages/turkey/
There are details for two National Communication Officers - they should be able to help.

2. Obs/Gynaecology

Good Luck.
