So called deterents don't usually work - people still commit crimes they know they can go to jail for or in some countries even die for - if you are tooled up the chances of you being over powered and your weapon used against you just increase the odds that you will get hurt...

I doubt if it is that easy to actually stick a knife into someone either - what if it hits a bone - what are you going to do then? Take a few jabs while your burgular stands idly by and lets you do it. I don't think so.

I personally wouldn't want to see the UK go the way of the States - this just seems to be the beginning of the slippery slope to me.

but that would mean carrying the weapon with you on your way to the burglary, and then you might get stopped and arrested for carrying a concealed weapon.  The vast majority are cowards and will not risk it, equally if they did and then got caught they would be charged with an extra crime not you.  No can only be good news and bad for the tea leaf.

I agree Nichola. This is from a US study - substitute guns for knives if you wish:

"Research and statistics have shown that guns intensify crime situations, and increase the likelihood of a more violent or lethal outcome"

if you hold the knife with the blade being horizontal it will miss or slip passed the bonethats if you are trying for the chest, but you would be better with a baseball bat where you dont need such close contact and bring it down on the shoulder blades rendering your assailent useless.

I can see you with a baseball bat Nicola, not a full one but pink and skimpy:D

Yes me too Andy :D

- actually can't believe though that any one of us seriously thinks they can knife someone.

What a sad state of affairs...

These type of "solutions" to crime really are like sticking a plaster onto a decapitated head. Is it too much to ask that our politicions start to address the real issues behind crime.

There are countries like New Zealand where not only do the public have a very high regard for the police they also have a very low crime rate. Maybe we can learn some lessons instead of this type of knee jerk reaction that I feel will ultimately lead to more deaths, maiming and misery.

I'd rather just let someone rob my tele
