Travellors cheques maybe - these can be changed at Gold shops (which will be open) and who also tend to give a better rate of exchange and don't charge commission - or this was the case many years ago when I last used Travellors cheques.

Hope this helps Ian  :)

Don't you pay a commission and get a lower rate using the card?

Although that might still offset the risk of carrying cash.

Many thanks all

Ian  :)

Ps Nichola - travellers cheques are a good idea but at 20 yrs of age after a night on the town will they remember where they put them :D

Ian, would it not be sensible to get a safety deposit box at the hotel. Maybe the hotel or wherever they are staying have a safe in the room that can be hired. It is not only the money but it is passports and tickets as well. I would go for the safety deposit box and sterling travellers cheques. If they are stolen then they are replaced by the issuer.

That sounds like a sensible idea and the hotel web site does say they have safety deposit boxes - many thanks everyone :D

It you have a Nationwide card you can draw sterling with no commission charges, you also get the rate at that time when you draw it out.
They will charge for any other currency.

Travellers cheques are usually quite difficult to change now, gold shops will not normally change now. Unless they either charge a hefty commission or give a lower rate, which really equates to the same, less for your money. Banks also charge commission to change these and I would guess the change offices would. Anyone, gold shops, hotels etc will have to pay a fee to change travellers cheques, so will obviously pass this on.Think cheques in any form will soon be a thing of the past. They will join the ranks of, did you remember.... and so you must be very old....!

Just out of interest  - i drew out 600tl from a machine in Hisaranu on 20 Aug and on checking my bank statements i make it out to be -
600 Tl = 204.05 ex rate on the day plus charges of 4.08 non  uk commission charge plus 1.0 non uk withdrawal fee totaling 209.13 so - 209.13 / 600 = 2.869
I distinctly remember the exchange shop in hisaranu offering 2.84 on the boards, so even drawing out TL i got a better rate than the exchange shops. But no idea if they charge fees etc on that price?
