fresh fish DOES smell it smells strongly of ozone and the sea but not cat foody type fishy ,this exagerrated fishy smell is associated with fish that is not fresh.I often go to Fethiye fishmarket ,I dont find it dirty or smelling of old fish and the fish I have seen always looks fresh(I have never heard of anyone being ill).I do find it expensive as far as Turkish prices go but much cheaper than UK.Its the experience of sitting there late on a Saturday evening,I think it has a great ambience and must be experienced at least once.By the way the best prawns this year have been the grilled King prawn main course at Mangals.

aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

The gleam of the fish, the slime, the smell of ammonia, the bulging eyes, flies, the grime on the fishmongers apron. whats wrong with you all breathe it in!

Looking a bit green are we? Shouldnt have had that last Efes!

Seriously as the day goes on and as it gets later and they are clearin up it can develop a bit of an aroma, some oof that is due to waste, (you know guts -- fish stomachs, hearts, livers etc.) getting heated up and starting to decompose, and it is a fact some fish are smellier than others, for example even fresh Haddock smells a bit more fishy than Cod, but tastes better!

I buy my fish in the Fish Market in Bolton, very large Market, lots of turnover and very fresh, but, in high summer, it soon starts to smell so they sell it very quickly and close early.

May I recommend a decent slug of Raki , it may not remove all fishy odours, but after a few, you dont care!

Fethiye fish market is unique. The atmosphere there is unique. The fish is very fresh. Anyone not had fresh fish there?? Most stalls have prices visible whether the fish is farmed or from the sea, can anyone really taste the difference anyway! The fish smell at this time of year is more prominent, can't think why!! But check the fish it is so fresh. Which restaurant to use, if we eat in we see where Turkish people are eating and there are always many enjoying the fresh fish. Some Plaices! have the "too eager" front man. We just say Yok! Not sure what they are going to charge, Ask! One special plaice in this sterile world we just love to eat. Enjoy  ;)
