They say:-

Turkey is the 9th most fattening country in the world for Tourists to put on weight US being the first. Is it the Bread,Efes,Cocktails,Kebabs,Yougurt, baklava de de,de de...........  Or are we all TT and just eat a lot of Salads????

http://www.giverecipe.com/tourists-gain-weight-in-turkey.html

Maybe the oil content in the local Chindians or just the big portions including rice and chips and bread??

I must say my experience is quite the opposite - I lose weight on holiday in Turkey (and lost weight when we moved there). I also put on weight on my return to the UK :-\

being diabetic and only a half timer I agree with you Scunner. I have to reduce my insulin here compared to the half time in UK and do also loose weight here. The summer here to us means we do eat more healthy and a lot more active. No bean pole and do love the Turkish food and the "odd" Efes / Raki. Interesting figures though and a bit near the bone maybe??....... 8)

I was 97kg when i moved here 7 years ago, now fluctuating between 69 and 73kg depending on how many cakes i make and scoff. Plus a lot of stuff we cant get from home i make here with the advantage of no preservatives or additives. Deffo no TV dinners or greasy slimey UK kebabs either.

I'm a sucker for the bread when I'm in Turkey.. Durums, that bread filled with hot air for starters, half bread kebabs... And then there are the cakes!! Oh yes, I do put on weight when I'm in Turkey for sure.

Before Hubby joins me in Turkey I lose weight defo, when I am on my own for two weeks I walk and swim loads and take special K with me for breakfast, I am really disipilned (spelling!) and make myself healthy salads each evening, or the odd Calisto pizza delivery, hubby arrives and says you look great weight loss lovely tan and am really chuffed, then we get on the Efes together go out and eat loads and I put it all back on and more:(I reckon if you were careful though it is a great country to lose weight and tone up, all the lovely fresh produce in the market to make salads stir frys etc :)

I think a lot of it is the heat and the lack of availability of some bad things - here in the UK if I crave a fresh cream chocolate eclair or a Cadbury's double decker I can get one within minutes - in Turkey I couldn't and didn't get something else instead, the impulse just passes. I also find that such indulgences are far more rare in the heat, and if they don't pass then things like that tend not to kept in the fridge in shops so the appeal often goes when a stodgy melted mass in a wrapper is all that is on sale.

Also we do a lot more walking in Turkey, here I sit on my computer and jump in the car whenever I need to go somewhere.

I went from 60 kilo down to 48 kilo when I 1st lived here, and stayed that weight for 4 years, this year ive crept upto a healthier 54 kilo I blame this on my Turk partner living with me and doing some of the cooking, he uses lots of olive oil in his dishes, also I dont skip as many meals as before as now we eat together every evening.

Its been a good excuse for having to go and buy new outfits though all last years stuff are too tight!

Yes think you are right Keith I am ashamed to admit it but when in the UK I normally eat a whole family bar of chocolate each evening or a big bag of maltesers, when in Turkey particularly in August I just do not crave chocolate like you say it ends up a sogggy mess in the wrapper after you have bought it, I would far rather have some fruit or a fruit ice lolly, last night I ate a whole family bar of dairy crunch and thought afterwards why did I do that if I was in Turkey I know I would not have even had any chocolate in the fridge let alone eaten a family size bar of the stuff :)
