Wow, that's a huge sum. It must average more than £45,000 per household. I hadn't come across this figure before. Even with the UK's increasingly extreme concentration of wealth at the top end (Top 1%), since it is about deposit accounts, that must show substantial savings at lower levels.
Some politicians (and others) have tried to persuade us that a contributory factor to the financial crisis was "all of us" gorging ourselves with debt, maxing out our credit cards, and such like - it was really "our" fault. Well I never did and thousands of others must have been the same (probably at my age range in the population, I suppose).
