stoop - there is actually a lean-to building just where the spiral staircase should be.

About 25 years ago I stayed in a guest house in Blackpool. We were in the attic room. There was a rope set up on a coil a bit like a fire hose.
The instructions on the wall and from the owner were 'In the event of a fire throw the end of the rope out of the window, Climb out and grab the rope for a controlled decent to the ground' Fortunately we didn't need to try it. We thought Jeremy Beadle was hiding in the wardrobe filming us it was so unbelievable.

Gladly!  Initially it does look funny but in reality this is disgraceful (in my opinion). When staying in hotels I always check out the alternative escape routes as an actual incident is not the time to go looking!  If I had found this I would have had a few words with the manager and with the tour operator who sent me there.  I hope others who stayed there will do that.

TC and Thompsons used to have a safety team who's role it was to travel the world and check up on such things and used to use UK Fire Regs as the standard.  I don't know if they still do.

Eric - we booked through travel republic but take your point regarding tour operators.

Not sure what would have been gained by speaking to the manager.

PS Can someone advise on the situation in other hotels in Calis ?

Thomsons and Thomas Cook wouldnt Ok this for their hotel. They also will never take guests to a bar without a fire escape or at least without 2 exits

The best thing to do in a situation like this is to report it so I have passed this information onto Thomas Cook who I am sure will do something about it straight away.
