Where to go What to see.
« on: January 28, 2012, 22:22:37 PM »
Its a fair few months before we come on holiday to Calis but we have already decided that we will hire a car for 5 days.Who from we dont know yet so suggestions welcome. The other thing we badly need help with is where to go and what to see in those 5 days. We do want to go to Ephesus and Pamukkale but not sure if we can do both in one day.I have driven in Spain and Grecce so it cannot be any worse than those countries I hope  :) Wherever we go we do not mind staying overnight to get the most out of the 5 days.We just want to see as moch as possible. So folks if it were you in our shoes where would you go in those days?

The thing about Fethiye is that while you are quite well placed to visit the likes of Ephesus and Pamukkale, you also have an incredible amount in the close area - all well within a day's round trip. We went to Nerja in Spain last year and loved it, but in terms of tourist attractions they have some caves and a donkey sanctuary and that's about that for days out.

Have a look at what can be done in a day from a Calis base: http://www.fethiye.co.uk/about-fethiye/places-to-visit.html

It's quite good that website, I know the bloke wot rit it.

Thats a very nice site Scunner and have bookmarked it for future use.I notice though that most of the places to visit are easily got to by dolmus so no need to hire a car really.Any sugestions for places a bit further out anyone? As I said we dont mind staying overnight at any one place of interest rather than venturing out everyday from Calis.Patara sounds a nice place to visit so we can maybe go there in conjunction with somewhwere else on the same day.

It is not far from Patara to Kalkan which would be a good place to stay overnight.

you sound very like the memsahib and I!

They did a bit of a double take when I took the car I had rented back
and they saw the mileage!

Do consider that although car hire is not horrendously expensive in Turkey Petrol is, so, go for a diesel if you are going to drive a long way. Much as I love Calis/Fethiye if I was coming to Turkey for a week and particularly wanted to see Ephesus, Pammukale etc. by drivingt myself I would probably head further away toward Bodrum/Izmir regions as it will be a very long drive! I drove from Calis through to Side and back in one day and it was exhausting! In fact I cancelled any thoughts of driving to Ephesus! There are good value trips from Calis by Bus and staying overnight though.

There is so much to see and do around Calis that you can easily get to by car, Tlos is a fascinating Site, I would highly recommend an reasonably early start to Tlos, (not that far, about 40 minutes from memory) pay a guide ---- worth it -- and then a trout Lunch at the original Yakapark further up the Mountain, amazing views! A walk down the Sahklikent Gorge is amazing, the beaches like Ptara and Iztuzu are World class. A walk though the ghostly ruins of Kaya Koyu and a swim at Gemiler etc. Car Hire is all much thge same to be honest, I used Fethiye Renta-car just opposite the PTT and it was excellent, I have used 2 others that were ok! What I did like about these guys is that they did total insurance includeing HDW whihc most wont!

Enjoy Calis!

I suppose the point I was making was that Fethiye is very lucky in that it has so many things to see nearby as it sits in the middle of so much - so you don't need to travel hours on end to experience great days out. I do intend adding more and of course that means having to go further afield in time. Glad you liked the site, thanks  :)

I would have thought something like that would get blanket coverage. Perhaps you missed it because you were two sheets to the wind.
