Door to door collectors
« on: June 30, 2012, 21:02:00 PM »
About 3 weeks ago, a young man came to my door "selling" cheap pens at vastly inflated prices, supposedly to pay his university fees. I suggested that he talk to FETAV with a view to getting a bursary to help. He was most put out that I declined the offer of his pens & my suggestion.

I thought no more about it until earlier today. 2 women appeared at the door collecting for Children's Charity, the only other piece of intelligible English was "help me". Although they did have some printed matter with them, I was a bit suspicious & even more so with the speed with which they scarpered when I mentioned Calis Children's Charity.

I later had a conversation with one of my Turkish neighbours, who asked if the collectors were from 3Cs, when I confirmed that they weren't, he said that was good, as he believed that door to door collecting is illegal.

So if anyone comes to your door asking for money for Children it is NOT3Cs & I leave it to you to decide whether or not to give to these people

They came to us yesterday. Their English was poor so wasn't sure what they wanted, but had some printed matter as you say. When we said we didn't understand she moved on to the next house. We thought it odd as we are on a complex.

What area do you both live in? I had this sort of scam 2 years ago in Koca Calis at my villa.

I'm Babatasi, not too far from Tansas. I did seem to remember it happening before, but couldn't find anything on search

We've had twice a man and young woman collecting for kids with leukemia. Their stuff seemed bona fide enough but who knows, I bought one anyway - 5 lira.

I have CCTV camera's on my door step, seems to stop any charity collectors coming up to my door, maybe that's the solution. ;D

On a serious note never leave your door open to go and get money or info or anything else if you have cold callers on the doorstep always close the door (locked), may even be prudent to have the door on a latch, you never know who's legit or not and what their intentions are!
