I to always have my passport open on the right page and most times he or she closes it and opens it page after page after page.

They need to check the photo page first. I used to tell them what page my valid visa was on to save them having to rifle through all the pages

we have just renewed our passports as due to expire in Jan 2013, but our old passports have the visa in we brought in May which is actually still valid for our September trip ... do you think if we take our old passports with the visa,s in to show them we will not have to buy one, or as the passport now has the corners cut as invalid they wont accept it....

You should have bought the reduced price short term visa for a fiver sunlover  ;)

Not sure how you go on with that one. You could try it but then if it fails you will end up at the back of the queue  :(
