So how much is a basic Turkish phone now? Surely it's cheaper still to buy one there rather than register a foreign phone?

I think I was offered a v basic Nokia for 100 TL in the large Turkcell office near the Vodafone office on the main road near the mosque.

I paid about 70 lira for mine 6 years ago so in view of my plan A not being feasible I have now ordered a new rubber keypad (1.99 delivered from Hong Kong) and a new battery (£2.49 eBay) and it will have a complete makeover when we arrive and I will treasure it for years to come  :)

Ian's mobile phone. The telecommunications equivalent of Trigger's broom.

Might work.  Like you I had an old Nokia but it wouldn't hold its charge.  Bought new battery and new charger but still no good.

Sometimes it is better to pay the tax and have your phone registered.  Luckily they hadn't started to charge tax in March of 2012 when I updated.  The phone I bought cost £19 in the Carphone Warehouse (this was discounted by £25 as I hadn't upgraded in the previous six months  The same phone in Kipa was over £100.

If you are looking at an iPhone or similar, it very much cheaper to buy in the UK.

Hi Marggie - my phone is registered and bought in Turkey but sadly it is looking a bit worn now.

So I thought if I replace it with an identical one which I have "spare" and hardly used in the UK then just put my Turkish sim in it - it should work and to be honest I don't mind buying a new phone in Fethiye BUT I begrudge having to pay to register a second phone when I have done this once.

However it looks like my "we can rebuild it" approach will have to suffice for now :-)

"We have the technology" hope it works.

Ian, I understand your feelings regarding having to pay twice, would gall me too. ;D

Just to give a quick update.  After 6 weeks from registering (115tl) to paying the 280tl for unlocking, it's still locked.  I had been told by SIM Elektronic that it would take 9-15 days to unlock.  It's now 4 weeks!!  I went again yesterday and was told to wait another 10 days!!!  They asked if I wanted my money back instead - yes!!!  I am due to go tomorrow to collect the money.  Let's see what happens then.

Their latest excuse is that it is the provider's fault that it's not unlocked - Apple in America and that's what's taking so long!!!

We'll see what happens in the next instalment.
