No one would suggest any company selling flights or holidays at a loss BUT many years ago (showing my age folks) a man in Scotland started a business called AA Brothers. They sold booze on the basis that they sold for a small profit but sold shed loads, which they did.  Effectively, the company made fortune.  If one man can do it then Thomas Cook, Thomson, Jet2 and the others can apply the same formula. Every now and then a cheap flight appears but overall the price of flights ARE expensive.

The point is that why should they own and maintain 5 planes and make a pound per passenger when they can own one and make a fiver out of each passenger. You do seem to think they are running a public service - they are actually running a business.

Of course we have benefits Jacqui, but they are mainly given to immigrants thanks to our out of date politicians.

If you save all the money that we English give you for free prescriptions, free hospital parking, free this, free that your flights are free so button it. Independence for Scotland - YES PLEASE.

I think you will find that thanks to Berwick on Tweed and the continuation of the border at the same angle as it strikes the coast that a lot of it is technically English oil/gas

Chinook,   No matter about the coast, the oil is in Scottish Waters....  My Husband 30 years in the Oil Industry seems to think you are speaking rubbish, but he did not put it as politely as that
