Escaping the Heat and the Hassle of Marrakech - Essaouira
« on: July 14, 2013, 17:55:18 PM »
Following my review on Marrakech, I thought I would share our experiences of our DIY trip to the Moroccan seaside town of Essaouira. I promise it will be my last on the subject   :)

We went and booked bus tickets ourselves, and our chosen bus was full which was a real disappointment till we were informed that the "comfort plus" bus had seats still, and at a pound each more, I thought to hell with the expense. Let's all have a big reclining seat and aircon. Making the price per ticket for a three hour journey around £9. Another walled city, like a mini Marrakech-on-sea, with the advantage of a beach and a most welcome sea breeze. Another medina, this one quieter, almost hassle free and relaxed.

We booked the hotel, the amazingly authentic Palazzo Desdemona inside the ancient city walls at Booking.com:

Our room was fabulous, with a second bedroom through a heavy old arch   :) :

Our romantic four poster plans were scuppered when the kids fell in love with the bed:

Our room overlooked the back alley inside the walls and we had an "estate agents sea view" for those with a head for heights and a flexible neck:

The beach was stunning, and floodlit after dark - it really stayed buzzing at night due to this. I think we are pretty much facing Madeira out to sea to the west:

If only the guys in Marrakech realised how well they could do, if they just left people alone to browse. Here are some general photos of our shopping expedition:

Oh, and how much would you have to pay to stay in a traditional, comfortable, stunning hotel inside the walls of the city, 5 minutes walk from that beach and literally steps from the medina and markets? Well, a double room with private bathroom and breakfast will cost you at least £31.

Now, that really appeals to me.  Love the shopping area, could probably spend a few hours browsing there.

Did you eat out or in your hotel and what was the food like?

We ate out, although the restaurant in the hotel looked really nice. There are seafront restaurants who do local dishes and pizza/paninis, so great for lunch and for the kids. I tried to memorise the names of the top 10 restaurants on Tripadvisor, as it is an absolute maze and your chances of finding one specifically would be slim. I did ok, we found one and it was a 50/50 split, 2 meals were enjoyed, 2 were average/bland.

Judging by the reviews it had on TA I think maybe it just wasn't for us. The local food there did seem to favour savoury with sweet, not something everyone likes. I had a local seafood flaky pastry thing and it was very nice (and a bit sweet  :)

Thanks for that Keith.  Been reading up on Essaouira on Trip Advisor and Lonely Planet, looks like it is worth a visit.  Temperatures look pretty good in the autumn too.   :)

Yes definitely worth a visit, I would suggest not a week or a fortnight - we arrived at lunchtime one day and left at 5pm the next and felt we'd pretty much done it  :)

A few days as part of a two (or more) centre holiday perhaps.

It is only 2hrs 23 mins from Agadir, so that may be a possibility!   :)

And only 3 hours from Marrakech - or 5-6 hours from Casablanca  :)

Think we will give Marrakech a miss.  Would probably be okay for All Inclusive in the winter if we were the type that didn't want to leave the hotel, but even when  All Inclusive we like to go out through the day to explore and return in time for teatime drinkies!   :)

Went there 40 odd years ago whilst working* in  Gibraltar, 4 of us on our Easter break, hired a car in Gibraltar and went across on the ferry to Tangiers (was cheaper than hiring one in Morocco, and a better car). Drove down to Marrakech on the first day, stayed a couple of days, then went on to Casablanca, Safi, Rabat and back to Tangiers. We were camping all but the last night in Tangiers, where we splashed out on a hotel.

The cost of this epic journey back then, I took £25 off each of the guys, paid for the car, fuel, ferry, camp site fees, food, hotel on last night and gave them each £2 back from what was left. Great week we had too.  ;D
