It's very true that expats do not put a drain on the system and do infact contribute greatly, (especially in winter) to the economy but the present Turkish Government seem to have some strange agenda that they're keeping close to their chests.  When young Turkish people are disenchanted with how things are changing then expats have NO chance. The stipulation that you must have the health care SGK, which is a good thing from what some friends have told me, well that's 220ytl per month for a couple. Living in the sun is fast becoming very expensive but the worst thing is the ever changing laws, which no one can foresee.

I think slikmrs what they are saying is you will no longer be able to apply for a 5 year residence.  Its  a little vague at this moment what happens to the people who already have a 3 or 5 year residence.

It looks to me like permits will be renewed annually and that each person who applies must have at least £3,000 (£250 per month) in their bank account. This will obviously be checked each year.

So - a couple with only £250 per month coming in would also need to have a bank balance of at least £3000 as well in order for them both to get residency. In the second year they would need the same and so on.

If you want permanent residency then you must have been resident for 8 years without interuption.

Phew!

Are you renting or do you have your own home? 3 year agreement if renting, 5 if you own.
I wish I understood the governments agenda on this. I think a one year at a time renewal is going to make me feel a bit unsettled.

Marggie - has that now been confirmed?
I read posts from people who had received treatment only last week and believed it was just one of the usual rumours that changes were possible - their premiums had not increased and their wives were not charged - as usual.

The way I originally heard it was that if your wife was down on her residency as "emekli" - then the state considered that if you were in receipt of a pension - then you were no longer totally dependent on your husband and could therefore pay your own premium.
