Giving on CBF
« on: November 27, 2013, 21:40:35 PM »
Well. What can I say !

Due to past experience of the generosity of CBF members, I dared to believe that we could fill an advent calendar. And, guess what, you did, without a problem.

Then people, for whatever reason, who had missed out on the first calendar, posted that they wanted to double up on the calendar.

So I decided to start another calendar.

It was shortly after I did that, I confess to beginning to feel that I was getting into slightly “dangerous” waters.

As scunner said “People will support these wonderful causes. Or they won't.”

The balance between feeling passionately about wanting to help the kids and not hounding people is very difficult and it is very, very important to get it right.

Then one day when I was looking at the advent thread the following advert appeared immediately above it.

That really struck a chord with me and made me even more appreciative of the generosity of CBF members.

So all I can say is a massive thank you to everyone who was kind enough to participate.

PS There will be another call on your generosity    ;).

For us it also coincided with Children in need and The Philippines appeals but we did take a large donation of hamper goods... There are a lot of members who donate in other ways so you have done brilliantly with this but as with everything else in life, there are people who give and those who dont.. Let's hope they never need help themselves... .. The 3cs are over the moon with all your efforts I know... Love to u and Brenda.. Xxx

It is quite obvious, when you do the fundraising or collect the donations, that the great efforts made are nearly always by the same handful of members here. Those individuals are an amazing group of people and God only knows how many little lives they have directly and positively touched.

But I am also the person who says that CBF is not the place to 'hound' people to donate/play and they will, or they won't. It used to irritate me greatly to see someone who maybe sold a car on here then read the topic about Bozalan School and then just move on to the next topic without even thinking that maybe they could give something back, for the help and enjoyment they may get from both/either this forum and/or Turkey itself.

Later I learned that people who don't donate here may not be a bunch of stone hearted meanies (    ;) ) - and I learned that when I went into our local Tesco and had a tin rattled in my face and an attempt was made, using the weapon that is words, to almost embarrass me into putting money in. I could have got embarrassed, but then I thought that I do my bit for charity, just not theirs.

Whilst I would love members who have benefited from our advice, information, laughs and tales on CBF to show any appreciation for our efforts by slinging a fiver in the charity pot once in a while, it will never be required or expected on Calis Beach Forum. Not least because people who didn't may well have their own charity choices to support.

The amount we/3c/Highlander/Animal Aid/Embrace etc. have helped raise for local causes over the years is astonishing, anyone who helped with that can see the results, be it a tagged and neutered dog or a warm jumper for a little lad up in the cold winter mountains, and be exceptionally proud. I am.

That last statement brought a tear to my eyes.. I know you aren't everyone's " cup of tea" but there are people like me who know the man behind the forum...and I think you and your family are wonderful..I am proud to have been a member of The 3cs and a member of this forum... Its the bars and businesses who benefit from the Charities that p*** me off. Barbara and and I once took a collection bucket around the bars who were full to bursting after one of the fairs. We got 5 lira!!!! Because they couldn't afford to give anything!!!!  but I wasn't allowed to say that until I left Turkey..   ;)

I will be in trouble now..  I hasten to add that there are certain bars who have always supported the charities and are dedicated to helping the charities... And are happy do what they can.

Actually I am everyone's cup of tea, how dare you  ;)

Some people don't like the way this forum is run, they should try it as many have (where are those forums now) - then they'll understand. As I said before, when you are as popular as I am, it's understandable that a few people want to smack you in the face with a brick  ;)

I didn't give to this one for many of the reasons stated above. Maggie and I have our own charities that we support.

However. having said all that, I do think that those who go out of their way to raise funds for those less fortunate are brilliant! Well done H and to all those who do similar things for charity.

Oh - and I've also got a wild £20 bet on with Crabbit that he won't finish above me in I Know The Score. Charity of the winner's choice. Not looking good for me at the moment :(

And well done CBF - 10 years and still going strong. I don't think anyone in their right mind would have thought in those early days that a holiday/ex pats forum would end up doing so much for so many needing help in Turkey - and I include dogs, cats and dolphins in that too.

I think this Forum is the best, it gives so much information.  I know we would never have managed without all the help on CBF and it's all free, don't need to buy a book or travel guide.   I also love the way we can all give back (if we choose) to help those less fortunate, in the place we all love.
I know there are so many worthy Charities but I like to help the ones both in the U.K and in Turkey nearest to my heart.
I was valuing in the Cancer Research Shop this week, something that costs me nothing but my time.  I had a large box of mixed jewellery to look through.   I was so delighted and pleased as punch to find a solid gold bracelet and then a necklace and some more valuable piece of jewellery.   I know they have sold some of the items already.
