Ignorance is the problem - ours included - people think poor hygiene, endless deserts, bushy beards, curly shoes and flowing gowns - they really do!!! The worst one I ever heard was a friend who had become part of a divorcee lady's club - the deal is each has a turn to choose the holiday destination and the rest must go along with it. Apparently it worked well until one lady used her turn to plump for Turkey. Well no way - it wasn't happening (and didn't happen). The reason? One of the ladies explained that there was no way they could go there..."the men w**k in the street"!

Do you know my Aunt Lydia, Scunner?
The first thing she said when I told her we were moving to Turkey was: "But you'll have to wear a burka."
Closely followed by: "But they are all dirty and have bad teeth. They don't have proper floors in the houses."
And let's not forget that my toilet would be a hole in the ground or that I'd have to put up with chickens wandering through my kitchen. (Actually, that last one might be true.  ;D ;D )

When I said we had wifi and electricity and running water, she was quite surprised.
My uncle really wants to visit, but even though he has shown her all the photos we've posted on Facebook and she can see how gorgeous it is, she maintains she won't come.  :(

Well, we too had negative thoughts about visiting Turkey for our first time & similar to all your views we were the same & unexpectedly fell in love with it. However, I do feel flight times in hand with prices are a huge factor, we went to Spain last September for a cheeky week, after already spending 2 & a half weeks in June in Calis, I have to say Spain was quite alot cheaper, linked with shorter flight times for families it's a no brainer really, plus you now have the 'council' in Calis not getting jobs along the canal etc finished or sunbeds on the prom............ kind of speaks volumes why, ON SAYING THAT, can't wait till we visit for 17 nights at the start of September this year, will be curious to see the difference in price from Portugal, which is where we're off to next week, lets hope all have a good season in Calis though  :)

As long as you book ahead by a reasonable amount of time, a return flight to Spain with one of the budget carriers can cost little more than a return private transfer from Dalalman to Fethiye - and as long as you steer clear of the tourist trap restaurants, eating and drinking generally costs less with larger and more varied choices available.  Even without kids, its pretty much a no brainer for holidaymakers.  And me   :)

You'll get a shock then, in my experience Portugal is a lot cheaper than TR and that includes eating out and drinking in Lisbon.

The Sensatori is I think the hotel being built by Barut and is Yaniklar/Cıftlik. Cant remember the name of it, but very close to a big housing complex. very large piece of land which they have recently started work on.

JF, i hear what your saying & agree with you, sadly i feel how things stand this may be our last visit for a while to Turkey. Our last visit to Portugal was just as they changed to Euro, costs there were extremely high!! Our first visit to Turkey about 12/13 years ago saw the cost of visiting & eating out etc to be very low, just what you need, especially when you have 3 children. I love Turkey, the views are amazing, I understand 'progress' doesn't come cheap, but i hope they don't price themselves out of the European market.......

Re prices.  We are in the new Corner Cafe and there is a one page menu with any meal for 10 Lira. There is also a large menu and the most expensive thing is steak for 32 Lira.
Phil just had a 10 Lira Chilli con carne and he said it was lovely.  I had a whole breast of chicken with mushroom sauce for 14 lira...
I can throughly recommend this place.

We were amazed by the value for money in Spain and Portugal - even in the 3 courses for 9.90 euro places the food was excellent - and you are never far from a free drink on the house - something I cannot remember happening in Calis even once for many a year. Also the drinks - we watched the Wimbledon final (the one Murray lost) in a bar where drinks such as beer, red & white wine, soft drinks were ALL 1 euro - not happy hour, 24 hour - and the red wine was brill!

The Government are causing all this to the Turkish tourism industry - meat prices soaring because they export the vast majority to help with their balance of payments - and the war on alcohol continues at every opportunity there is to put prices up. You can see evidence of both everywhere - even the 3C promises auction has a list of prizes which has changed from "Any meal for two" to "Any chicken meal for two" - and with the cost of drinks no wonder I haven't had one on the house in years!

I calculated how horrific the increase in alcohol products has been, in a topic from a while back. If you haven't seen that, it will shock you.

"To highlight the effect on raki - a 70cl bottle cost 2.37 TL in 1998, now 51.5 TL. Had we experienced the same rise in whisky prices in the UK in the same 15 years, a bottle of whisky bought just before the Millenium at £12 would today be for sale at £264.10 a bottle."

I'm not overly interested in what an Efes costs or a meal, if we want something we have it, we're on holiday. But it will change how people judge Turkey - and the place we used to say you couldn't spend you money is long gone, sadly.

Where is the new corner cafe Jacqui ?
It just up the main road out of Calis opposite on the corner of the road that goes to the Sunday Market. It's opposite the bike shop.
