The Cretans, and other Greek islanders, often use the word raki (with a dotted i)  - especially with tourists, I suspect - to refer to their traditional island drink of Tsikoudia. This was a habit that, apparently, they picked up during their subjugation by the Ottoman Empire. I have found the liquor also referred to as "raki" by Greeks in (southern) Crete.

For many years I drank raki without paying for it - in both Greece and Turkey - after being offered one as hospitality at the end of the meal. It was offered me described as "Made by my uncle, in a village, in the mountains". Since then I have, on occasion - well quite often I suppose - after an expensive meal asked the proprietor if he had any "special raki" behind the bar. "What do you mean? Special raki?". "You know, made by your uncle in a village in the mountains". "Ahh! I think I do!". Not only have I found this to work in both Greece and Turkey, but also - just the once - in the Cyprus Kebab House in Bristol (there had been 12 of us on a big celebration meal).
