Flood in Fethiye

The youtube footage of cars driven at speed through the floodwater reminds me of scenes in Somerset last winter/spring when "disaster tourists" drove down to, and through, some of the flooded villages on weekends to goggle at devastation. Driving at speed, "to get through", they raised bow waves that topped the sandbags and thus flooded houses that were otherwise OK. I don't have publishable words to express the stupidity, thoughtlessness and selfishness of such people.

Holidaymakers never think that places they visit during the summer months can be hit like this.

I agree with the comments about some drivers, most were taking care when passing through deep water yet plenty were overtaking at speed, sheer madness when kerbstones and speed ramps etc. were underwater. We tried to get into Fethiye today but found the car park next to the town square was flooded up to the wheel arches of the cars parked in there. Further on, the police had closed the road from the mosque down towards Migros and fire engines were desperately trying to pump away floodwater. Without stopping, it took us an hour to drive from Çalis to Fethiye and back!

On a brighter note, the new drains certainly seem to have made a big difference around the parts of Çalis we observed today, in years past we have seen water knee deep down our road during really bad storms, today we didn't have so much as a puddle.

Looking at some of the videos you can see that the damage to some shops and businesses is bad. Terrible for the people concerned. I remember when they undertook the storm drain work in the red carpet area people expressing the view that it would probably not work or there would be trouble with the pumps.  Looks like they were probably right on both counts. Will anyone take responsibility for this particular area of misery? I some how doubt it.

Agreed Apollo! What the FT should be reporting is the heartache this must have caused to hundreds of businesses and home owners - and asking the questions why? and what can be done to stop this happening again?

Maybe they aren't that type of publication but if not then maybe they should be.
