Sir Winston Churchill
« on: January 30, 2015, 14:01:01 PM »
Can it really be 50 years  since this great man was laid to rest, some good TV footage on today of the greatest Prime Minister England has ever had, and Saviour of our Nation. I can remember it as if it were only yesterday, I was 17 years old and watched it on Television. Will never forget the feelings people showed that day.

Had you said "greatest wartime Prime Minister" I could probably go along with you. Our greatest peacetime PM was Clem Attlee who defeated Churchill in the post-war election and about whom Churchill insisted he had never said "A modest man, but then he has so much to be modest about". Attlee modestly created modern Britain with the top legacy, but by no means the only one, being the NHS - created by him and Aneurin Bevan

Never mind, you nearly got it right, Des.

Ah The chairman of the A- D-B arrives at last, I wrote down 3 names who would respond to this post, and guess what.  ;) Let me try to enlighten you  Colwyn, I opened the new topic in the right section. as people all over Europe, Asia, America, Australia, are today celebrating the anniversary of the funeral of Winston Churchill. millions of people all over the world are watching this. this is not about  which party in politics you support. and if you care to go into a search of Winston Churchill on the internet, you might just find a few sites state him as the greatest English prime minister ever. not  just my opinion by the way, and please read carefully. Not just a great wartime prime minister. Have a nice day. if you ever get back to Calis, I would love to meet you, would be interesting.  ;)

Nothing to do with party politics, Des. The best thing Churchill did in peacetime was when he wasn't PM. It was when he was a Liberal and a sidekick to Chancellor David Lloyd George. That was to support the introduction of the People's Budget. His period 1951-56 as a peacetime Prime Minister was a shoddy disaster.

But carry on "enlightening" if you wish.

In the course of my work I used to carry out work on a rented house. The elderly tenant, George, had served in
the Coldstream Guards and spent quite a long time protecting Churchill. They were stationed in the gardens and
grounds and he said every day the door to the garden would fly open and Churchill would stride across to nearby
shrubs, have a piddle, then straight back inside, without a word. The troops couldn't smoke but he said when they
had briefings or meetings with Churchill you couldn't see him for smoke. He said in all the time he was there, often
in hot weather, Churchills missus came out twice with a jug of lemonade and some glasses, and even then she never
spoke to them.George didn't enjoy his time there or the way he was treated. I had some interesting conversations
with him.
