Last year after going into a jewelry shop for money, we were actually followed down the street and shouted at by somebody from the change shop saying that what we had done was illegal!

For the sake of KathB's parents can someone assure them that if they use Zumrut (or other outlets) they won't be doing anything illegal.

Important I think.

Yes H it's the one Jacqui described above. Right hand side walking up from the bridge, just a bit further up from the ATM's.
We've always used them and never had any problems. They always count the money out in front of you
As far as I know it's illegal in Turkey for anyone else to change money.
Or so I've been told anyway   ;)

I can assure you they will be involved in doing something illegal. Although maybe it's the shop that does the illegal part.

You're probably right there Scunner, but not worth the risk really.

Hang on a minute - there are loads and loads of places where you can change money in the region.

Are we really saying that it's risky doing it other than at an "Official" Change Shop, whatever that is, or a bank. :(

Yes, that is why it has a notice in the Change Shop to tell you it is illegal to change money anywhere other than the Official Change Shops or the Banks.
This is why all the shops that used to (maybe still do) change money, have now taken down the signs from outside their shops, because it is illegal for them to offer to change money.   Note no sign outside Zumrut's anymore.   Incidentally H, he is Sedat, nice guy, we have bought from him the past, nothing against him at all, but the perhap KathB's elderly parents may not want to break the law?

It is illegal H, but you could go on exchanging your money at the jewellers for years and nothing happens, but if they decided to have a crack down for whatever reason someone could be in trouble.
A few years ago one of the other jewellers that we know in  Calis changed some money for us and took us right to the back of the shop so we couldn't be seen!  Thats when we found out it was illegal, though they obviously think its worth the risk

How the clothes shop man has been getting away with it all these years is beyond me!!

All the jewellers who used to have signs about exchange, no longer have them.  We used the official exchange shop this year and found the rate to be very competative.   :)
