Using simple economics, most flights to the USA departing from London fly up to and over Scotland but while 500 miles further away on that route, they are generally significantly cheaper than USA flights departing from Scottish airports.

Yes, and a lot of flights to the U.S.A from Scotand are cheaper than flights to Dalaman.

If you have a look at https://www.flightradar24.com you'll see that very few flights between the UK and Europe, and the USA and Canada use the northern route now. The vast majority of them enter and leave UK airspace in an area roughly between the Bristol Channel and Blackpool.

And the ones that still do are going 500 miles longer than if they leave from Scotland, and still cost less.

Its supply and demand.  The more carriers that fly out of an airport, the more competition there is to get bums on seats hence keener pricing from LHR, LGW & MAN.

Population of Scotland is (in comparison to London etc) small and widely spread hence not so much demand therefore fewer carriers operating those routes, with the knock on effect that they do not need to compete so much with other operators on price.

You want cheap flights?  Live somewhere with a high population density.    If someone chooses to live in the arse end of nowhere, then it figures that flights from their local airport will be higher.

Just had a quick look at today's prices on Easyjet website. The price of both our flights have doubled since we booked them early on Thursday morning. It's interesting to see that there are only a handful of seats been reserved on both flights as well. I wish I understood how the pricing system works on airlines. Surely they will have to reduce them some time in the future to sell them. Really glad we booked them early though.  ;)

Do you mean Chris35 only a few seats have been reserved as in by folk that pre book seats?
I never do i take pot luck, as you cant check in until few weeks before departure the prebooked seats cant be an indication of how well the seats are selling, mayb you dont mean that though and im just confused.com!   :)
