gets a little lonely in kalkan
« on: September 24, 2005, 13:52:06 PM »
Hi I have just registered on the forum. I live near kalkan with my Turkish husband which is a great place to live but soemtimes gets a little lonely especially in the winter time.

Wondered how Fethiye is in the winter? Any decent restaurants open winter time? There are a few in Kalkan which serve great food but soemtimes it is good to try recommended places in other areas and I dont know Fethiye that well.

Hi there ginja, I am sure you will find plenty to look at on here. I will let the people who live in Fethiye answer your question as we are only planning to move over next year.  If you use the search button at the top there has been quite a lot written about eating places in the past until someone comes along to answer your question.

Welcome to the forum and perhaps you can tell us about your experience of Turkey in Winter.

Teresa

Hi ginjababe

Welcome to the forum.  We have a place in Ovacik but have visited Kalkan a few times.  Hopefully we would like to make the big move over next year and so I'd also be interested in how you find it in Winter.

lindi :)

Hi ginjababe, welcome to the forum. We were in Calis over last cgristmas and there were a few places open. It was rather good in a way as we had a chance to have a good talk to people and get to know them really well.

there are good retaraunts open and not many people about so as canalman says you do get to know the people better than in season
calis is hoping to be a full yearly resort
but they do need to find more entatainment inside
lots of calis beach members live there full time
when the rains come you stay indoors

Hi Guys
Thanks for the responses, good to see that the forum is so well used. To answer a few questions about Kalkan in the winter ...it is cold from about end of Jan to march with lots of heavy rain but no snow! I miss the English rain which can be gentle and refreshing; when it rains here it is like a torrent and can wash up the roads in kalkan as the water comes down so fast and heavy from the surrounding mountains.

Still there are nice days when the sun is shining and you only need a light long sleeved top. It is really nice to walk on patara beach in the winter. I shipped over my rottweiler dog and so it is a good excuse to walk him there. I now have one dog, two cats and husband...only one of them isn't house trained!

My husband set up a new restaurant this year in Kalkan called Coast which is a really cool trendy place (cream sofas and chrome) and serves a mean  Thai curry, fresh pastas and really fab steaks. It has been so busy that I haven't seen him virtually all summer and have begun to forget what he looks like!

The winter time is quiet in kalkan but we are going stay open as there are quite a lot of  English living there all year with villas ( and I need my fix of Thai food) so we are opening Café Coast in the day and the restaurant in the evening. Since there is no kalkan forum like you has in Calis we are trying to make the café the place to go to chill in the winter and catch up with news, there will be a notice board, book exchange, board games etc....and fresh doughnuts, bagels etc.... (Guess who's cooking?)

We want to do some Murder Mystery evenings too. I love a good murder and it is a great chance to dress up and do something different for the evening!!

If we think it is worth it we are thinking of putting on transport from Fethiye so those hard core English who brave the winters can come and check out Kalkan and Coast for the evening and don't need to worry about drink and driving etc.....do you think it may work??

I would love to come to Fethiye too for a change and would like to find some good restaurants there too so any suggestions are welcome!!

Well must go got curtains to sew!!
