can some help me with this but I may be wrong in thinking that when I purchased a sim card in Fethiye for my old nokia phone from the Uk, I had to produce my passport and if I remember the chap in the shop took a note of the IME number on the phone and entered this on a form that i signed and I had to wait 24 hours for the sim and credits to be activated. Does this mean that the phone is registered or is it just the sim card?
UPDATE @22.03!
it seems that I was wrong in thinking that my phone was registered.
We will not be over again until May/June next year. does this mean that I will have to buy a new phone over there or can you still register after the 14th December?

I've read all the info on this topic.  Can I just get clarification - I can't use my UK mobile phone with a Turkish Sim card and have to buy a new Turkish mobile phone?  Perhaps I'm a liitle naive, but how do the Turkish networks know that I'm not using a Turkish phone?  (sorry, I'm a little dim!)

i had an english phone out there. the only way i could use a turkish sim (with turkcell) was to have an ''operation'' on my phone.

Was it painful?  Could I have an operation on my phone when I go out (probably not till next year) too?

Any phone that is unlocked will work in Turkey. The networks know about the phone through its IMEI number, like a serial number for the phone.

OK.  So when we were in Calis a couple of weeks ago, we took an old phone with us with the idea of leaving it in our apartment for anyone to use.  We didn't have it unlocked or registered.  Does that mean that when we want to use it next year, we won't be able to get it unlocked or even if we do, we still won't be able to use it because we didn't have the IMEI number registered in Turkey?

i think there is a bit of confusion here about getting a uk phone unlocked so that it can accept turkish sim cards, most of us have done this, the problem now is that if we dont act and register our phones with turk telecom they will be blocked bye thier serial no. through the turkish phone net work.this has to be done by 14th dec. up till now as far as i can see we have been unable to register them and all are waiting for instructions when and how to......does that make sense??
