Mobile phone registration in Turkey

sorry if this topic has already been covered because I can't find it but what is this about not being able to use our english phones abroad in Turkey and having to buy a Turkish mobile and register it?

There is great consternation about it apparently in Turkey. It costs 5 lira to register your imei.

Yes you have to register by the 13/12 . Thats if you have a Turkcell sim card. Then Turkcell will automatically take 50 kontors off of your credit as the 5TL payment. This of course only happens if you've registered your IMEI number with them. Apparently if your on holiday with your mobile you can of course use it to phone the UK, BUT if you are fortunate enough to live here then you have to register or lose the number and all the credits left on the phone. On going to a Turkcell shop on the 12th and seeing a queue of some 50 turks or more ( and not one UK citizen) I made drastic enquires. Hope this helps

See Turkey Discussion Forum (Not Calis Specifically ) under Mobile Phones where there are several pages on the subject. Don't worry if you have a Turkish sim card to put into your UK phone you will be able to register it next time you are here but you will not be able to use it until you have registered it. If you keep your UK sim card there is no problem.

Have just heard from Cheryl that my phone is registered nothing to pay I'm on Telsim. was informed by a text message to phone
