I have an icon in my bottom tray which says "can not check for windows updates" when I try and check it says "windows could not search for updates error found code 80072EFE

I have always been offered updated before, I am on xp not a copy

Probably down to changing firewall settings Mark - have you tried updating by going to www.windowsupdate.com directly? May do the job for you.
