Title: And What Edibles do you Bring BACK from Turkey..?
Post by: Scunner on August 23, 2013, 22:50:39 PM
Be honest now  :)

I have (but wouldn't necessarily do so in future  8) ) brought back the kid's favourite Turkish biscuits and cakes (most notably Pop-Kek, Turkey's greatest invention), and Turkish mayonnaise (nobody does it better in a bottle).

A selection of sweeties from the supermarket the family love them and particularly the Pistachio chocolate bars.
Also a few of boxes of Turkish Delight but only from the Turkish Delight Factory where it is ultra fresh.  Phil takes  a couple of boxes into his work and just leaves them open for the everyone to eat.  In fact, now when he is going on holiday they all tell him not to forget the Turkish Delight.
Although not strictly food stuff... Some antibiotic tablets  and some sleeping tablets.
Always bring home some spices etc.,

Dollycat Sleeping tablets are called Unisom they are 25mg.   I don't take them all the time, just occasionally, they are very good and I find I only need a half of one for a good night's sleep.  I gave a packet to my daughter who was having sleepless nights with my Granddaughter.  When her husband returned from offshore.  My daughter  took a whole tablet to get a good night's sleep.  She really did and did not wake until 9.00am.
Marggie, Antibiotics we have at the moment are called Amoklavin 1000mg.  We also bring them back for friends and family.  Handy if you have a sore throat etc., and cannot get an appointment at the Doctor.  Just need to take one per day, but the Chemist will write the dose on the box.
To both ladies.  We buy at the Chemists opposite Migros in Fethiye town centre.  He speaks excellent English and apparently trained to be a Doctor.

No problem, my name gets spelled lots of ways...It's not a problem.
The Chemist is a great guy.  I have said before how he diagnosed a problem I had and had been given the wrong treatment by my U.K.Doctor.   This Chemists told me exactly what was wrong, even showed me the condition on his computer.  Once i got the correct tablets I was fine.

I have brought tablets back from Turkey because they are so much cheaper than at home but only those I have to take regularly anyway.  I do worry about purchasing anti-biotics over the counter as there is a worldwide concern about the reduction in their effectiveness caused by mis-prescribing and/or unfinished courses.  I had been reading about bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics and some of the reasons below (from NHS England) -

"Inappropriate prescribing includes:
unnecessary prescription of antibiotics
unsuitable use of broad-spectrum antibiotics
wrong selection of antibiotics and inappropriate duration or dose of antibiotics"

I know how quickly anti-b's can get rid of a painful sore throat etc and when I have suffered, often wish I had some to hand but this could be speeding up the progress of more resistant bacteria if we take the wrong ones/ not enough for the specific infection etc?

You are absolutely spot on, Bluwise. When I mentioned to TA about this thread and how we could buy them in Fethiye, I got the lecture (he's an Organic Chemist and I am regularly treated to scientific lectures - lucky ol' me, eh?).

I'll be buying some.

We call the antibiotics horse pills and get the for friends and relatives.  They are not used constantly, just for emergencies, in fact,  I started taking some when I had to wait a few days for a Doctor's appointment.  I took them with me and the Doctor prescribed me some more and said they where the correct thing to take.  We don't pay for our prescriptions in Scotland.  So would not bring back lots of things we can get free from the Doctor.

Menthol, we have more than South Yorks in common - I'm married to a retired maths/physics teacher and over the years have learned not to get caught looking at the stars or I am subjected to the ins and outs of the speed of light.   I also never ask how some gadget works as that leads into a lesson on the miracles of electricity or those chip things!!  I say I've learned but actually, I still slip up now and then.......yawn, yawn

On our last visit we brought home 6 large packets of apple tea, a dozen packets of kofte mixes , always fresh red chillies from the veg market in fethiye, and of course the herbs from the supermarkets, a few sweets for the grandchildren,  i am just about finished the apple tea so good job we arrive in a few weeks, more stock coming home this time.

We seem to find more things we love about Turkey each time we visit, i think we need to cut down on the clothes to make room for the goods to bring home :)

I brought back a big bag of the green pointy mild peppers - the ones that go into menemen. Also a garlic bulb. Cost me all of 1 lira. Figs were also in season, but I wouldn't have got those home without a pile of squashed mush being at the bottom of my bag by the time the plane had landed, so I reluctantly gave them a miss.

I usually also get kilos and kilos of pistachios and a few other types of nuts, but the kids had had enought of the heat at the market before we could buy some this year.

The kids like Biskrem biscuits and "Pop Keks" which were a new one on me. From the supermarket I got some honeycomb, which was a very cheap (for me) at 3.75 TRY

Finally, we brought back a litre of Kavak white plonk ("Vino Collapso" ) which we didn't consume whilst we were there so just packed it. Useful to test the theory that some alcoholic beverages taste better in the country that they are produced rather than at home. We already have bottles of unopened Raki at home which at least partially proves the theory.

I've never been able to eat fresh tomatoes in the UK. The turkish ones are more than tolerable though.

It's an offence to bring honey into most countries as they are scared of diseases that may affect bees in that country.

Bringing food, animals or plants into the UK

- Outside the EU

You can’t bring meat, meat products, milk, dairy products or potatoes into the UK from most countries outside the EU.

You can bring up to 2 kilograms (kg) of fruit and vegetables (except potatoes) into the UK as long as they are:

    in personal baggage
for you and your family or friends (ie you can’t sell them)
free from signs of pests and diseases

You can also bring:

egg products, eggs and honey (up to 2kg in total)
fish (up to 20kg in total or 1 fish, whichever is the heaviest)

Any fish you bring in must be fresh and gutted, cooked, cured, dried or smoked.

I once brought about 4kgs of Feta back from Greece. When I opened my case I just poured the contents straight into the bin. It was rancid.
