Title: Tommy Cooper
Post by: mercury on April 21, 2014, 23:13:59 PM
David Threlfall gave an amazing portrayal of Tommy Cooper but I ended up not really liking Tommy as a person., He will get a best actor award for this surely.

David Threlfall was brilliant, he had Tommy Cooper off to a T

I hadn't appreciated what a good actor he is - excellent job

I never did like TC as a comic - didn't find him amusing - just frustrating.

Many years ago I worked at Enfield Football Club, which was attached to a cabaret venue called The Starlight Rooms. Tommy Cooper was one of the regular entertainers and could fill the place every time.  However he was the most unreliable act ever.  He would turn up just before he was due to perform, nearly always off his head drunk.  He never turned up for the sound and lighting check before the public arrived for the show.  On one occasion the resident host had to carry on with his introduction for nearly an hour because Tommy Cooper was "delayed". I never saw him sober.

Saw him live at Batley Variety Club once. He was off the wall but very funny. Not seen the drama yet but have copied it.

My mum never laughed at him - ever. She just never got him at all.

Agree with you Mercury. Threlfall gave a wonderful performance, but I didn't know that TC was such a troubled soul.

In the '70's, Tommy Cooper was booked to appear at " La Fabrique ", a night club in Bo'ness West Lothian, where I used to live. I was invited to the show by a business associate, and when he eventually decided to make an appearance on stage, rat-arsed, he was very promptly booed by each and every member of the audience, who all demanded, and were given, their ticket money back. The man has never, ever been funny, in my opinion, in fact, to my mind he ranks alongside that other pair of useless, boring fools, Morecambe & Wise, who, for years, pulled the strings of each and every T.V. promoter involved in their shows.

It really makes me angry when he, and the other aforementioned pair, are referred to as "British Institutions " !!

Cant agree with you there..I think Morecame and Wise were great in their day... The Xmas show was always looked forward too... They were "of the moment" like a lot of other acts... I find very few of todays "comedians" funny.... Just heard that Miranda is going to host a re hash of Generation game... Give me strength.. I know lots of people who like Michael Mcintyre .. Why???   My auntie and Uncle saw Tommy Cooper at Batley Variety, they said he was brilliant. I never saw the attraction. Maybe an age thing.

I thought it was a very good programme and Thelfall's acting brilliant - once I had got over the strange way make-up has stuffed his face. For me Tommy Cooper was the funniest person I ever saw on TV; like a great many others I started laughing when he walked on screen. The two British double acts mentioned above were also very good, although not a patch on the great Laurel & Hardy of course.

It was all 'of the day'  I was never keen on Morcambe and Wise. I thought 2 Ronnie's were better, but today's comedy acts surpass them by a mile. Peter Kay, Michael Macintyre, John Bishop, there's loads to pick from but it make  the comedians of the 60s and 70s look very tame

I think it must be age related and about enjoying the comedians of your day. Personally I didn't like 2 Ronnies, Dick Emery, Morecombe and Wise etc, and as for the likes of Bernard Manning.... Ewww
I grew up with Julie. Walters, Victoria Wood,  Harry Enfield, Rik Mayall, Rowan Atkinson, my favourite is Frank Skinner and still find them funny and 'today ' I like John Bishop, and Stuart Lee
Gordon must be older than I thought.

Hey, no ageism please, and if you take a look at my " Avatar ", you will see my age written there !!  ( I'll do the jokes, thank you very muckle ) !!  ;-)

No matter who they are or when they were about - if they appeal to your sense of humour then they are funny!

Me? Love M&W, TC, Jasper Carrot, Wood and Walters, Only Fools, Peter Kaye, Frank Skinner, Dave Allen. Can't laugh at Miranda, Manning, Bishop, Macintyre.

Yep, we're all different. From your list I can't remember Victoria Wood saying anything remotely funny ever, Jasper Carrot was funny for about 2 years then should have been shot, and I find McIntyre, Manning and Bishop relatively good. Agree on the rest - Dave Allen was a genius. Even as popular as he was, I think he was hugely underrated.

In modern times I like Paul Merton, absolutely love Sean Lock, hate those two women who do the baking programme I think (Mel & Sue is it? Hugely unfunny), and can't stand that beardy one who wears all the brown corduroy.

Never got Frank Skinner,  macintire, bishop, Whitehall, brand and howard are the worst of the modern lot for my money.

Over the years I saw many of the great comedians live but funnily enough never managed to catch  cooper and morecombe and wise, though I loved what they did on tv.  I would have liked to see billy Connolly but I wouldn't pay the ridiculous ticket price.

Best of the live in no particular order canon and ball, tarbuck - surprise myself there - Lenny Henry, jimmy jones, dukes and lee, roger de courcey and nookie bear,  and the biggest surprise who was unexpectedly funny tom o conner.  Worst of the live Freddie star and the nasty  Jim Davidson.

Laurel and hardy sublime,

TC just wasn't funny to me but…….Freddy Starr - cringe-worthy, embarrassing, sad.  I turn the TV over at the mention of his or Brian Blessed's name - horror!
I know Brian is not a comedian but if he's on a show he tries to be funny and it's awful - nothing more than a booming voice - and that isn't clever.

Ah, you remind me of another - Phil Jupitus - an entire career made without any humour at all. Just a well tried formula which is when nobody laughs, say it again but louder, then if nobody laughs, say it again but even louder. I'll turn over if he is on any show.

We saw Canon and Ball at Scarborough or Brid. I've tried my best to forget about that! Cheers for reminding me UBT!

Carrot I've seen live twice and both times the audience were in tears! Love him!

Peter Kaye is just one of those who makes me laugh by just being there.

Anyway that's just my take on it all  :)

I saw Billy Connolly probably at his height of fame - he always starts his huge venue tours with one small venue and that year it was Caesar's Palace (no not Las Vegas - Luton!!).  It was a masterclass in comedy - I knew many of his routines off by heart thanks to video (and even LP!) but it was like the difference between watching a football match on Sky and actually being at the game.

I doubt I'll ever see better.

My father was in school with Tommy Cooper, (died within 4 weeks if each other too), my father wasn't too fussed with him in school, but did love watching his act, I thought David Threlfall did a fantastic adaptation of Cooper, I forgot how good an actor Threlfall is, his background in "serious" theatre has served him well.

Humour is like music - very subjective.

I loved Tommy Cooper.

I never 'got' Benny Hill.

I love Peter Kaye and Michael Macintyre.

I loathe and detest Miranda to the point of punching the TV.

Love Jo Brand cant stand Katy Brand.

Adore Alan Partridge, abhor Lee Evans.

Never really saw the appeal of Dave Allen - other half still loves him.

Billy Connolly was magnificent in his heyday - I do actually remember weeing my pants one Saturday night in the living room at home watching him.

Spike Milligan also made me actually vomit with laughter (I was a tad ill at the time) on the Michael Parkinson show telling a story about a business man with diarrhoea on a train.

Morecambe and Wise and Two Ronnies had their moments but some of it was frankly boring.

Sean Lock is a genius, Sarah Millican needs locking up.

All very personal and subjective.

I also love Sean Lock for refusing to pay that fine for sitting in First Class with a standard ticket.

Dave Allen. Brilliant in his day.. Billy Conellyalso. I never got the goons, spike Milligan and crew never appealed to me.. Hancock got funnier as I got old enough to appreciate him... I loved to listen to The grumbleweeds, Jimmy Clitheroe and Al read on radio.. Comedians were as innocent as us in those days... Fools and horses still funny no matter how many times you watch and Steptoe and son...
We used to get free tickets for the shows when we had a business in Blackpool.. Frank Carson live was great, Ken Dodd mildly funny. Barrymore dreadful.. Norman collier very funny but the best live comedians Peter Kaye and Rowan Atkinson.
We got free tickets to see chubby Brown every year... Not a hope!!!!

There was a look alike in Benidorm.. There was a documentary about him on TV about how he struggled to bring his daughter up on his own.. During the day he was a lovely bloke but his act was even more vile than the real one... The best comedians for me are the ones who don't have to eff and blind to get a laugh.. And no I am not a prude.

Chic Murray was a famous very droll  Scottish comedian who appeared on British T.V. very regularly.  He had a double act with his wife Maidie.    My Mother loved Chic Murray who was a big inspiration and friend to Billy Connolly.  Billy often tells some of Chic's jokes.  Including the one were a Chic fell over and a guy comes along and looks at him lying there on his back and says "Did you fall over"  "No"  Chic said "I am just trying to break this bar of chocolate in my back pocket"

Tommy Cooper bored the bejesus out of me and I could never understand the appeal of Benny Hill.  I'm surprised no one has mentioned the late great Kenneth Horne and his ensemble cast who had me in stitches when listening to Sunday afternoon radio.  Much Binding In the Marsh, Round the Horne.....years ahead of it's time and still hilarious today.

Treat yourselves while he is still with us, go and see Ken Dodd, no effing and geffing, home well after midnight and marvel at how funny the guy is. Ignore his stuff on telly. Monty Python crew although more a show than an act. Of modern day comedians two stand out, Stuart Lee incredible insight and his mocking of Michael Macintyre is genius, the other stand out is Peter Kaye, the shrewdest comedian ever; do a show, tour it, release a DVD in several formats, then on to TV, then a DVD about the tour. Rinse and update; change teletext for internet and garlic bread for cheesecake, then repeat whole process. Still funny mind.
