Title: Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant
Post by: sandgrounder on June 14, 2015, 08:55:18 AM
We have recently returned from a short break in Cornwall and can highly recommend this wonderful restaurant. Not a place for anybody who doesn't like seafood but, if you do, then this is a must try place. Set in the beautiful harbour town of Padstow, this restaurant is the choice of many of the countries top chefs. The previous evening Gordon and Tania Ramsey dined there and Heston Bloominthingy eats there at least 4 times a year!

It isn't surrounded by the trappings of Michelin stars so don't be worried about any particular dress code. The staff are helpful, very knowledgeable and very enthusiastic with regard to the food on offer. The menu changes everyday, depending on the fresh wares available on the harbourside.

If you want to dine at a table then you have to book well in advance but you can also wander in off the street and dine at the bar. We were booked in advance and enjoyed a wonderful meal without being rushed. The waitress explained all the seafood on the menu, how it was caught, how it is cooked and how the different sauces compliment the individual fish etc.

The price isn't bad either. 2 starters, 2 mains and 1 dessert came to £98.00. So, if you ever find yourself in Cornwall, consider giving this place a try, you won't be disappointed.

OMG The people here in Calis would collapse at those prices.  Every the Ada is cheaper than that.
I also think a lot of these places owned by Chefs hardly every see the owner.  He generally puts his name over the door and seldom comes to the place again.

It isn't in Calis Jacqui, that's why the post is in "All things that have nothing to do with Turkey".

With regard to the owners not being there, A top Chef does not open a restaurant with the intention of just putting his/her name over the door. They Put many years into training junior chefs to their exacting standards and only when they are completely satisfied will they promote to head chef in any particular restaurant. We have eaten in quite a few "fine dining" establishments where the name above the door has not been there. The restaurants still retain the Michelin stars and some, under the guidance of a junior chef, have gone on to claim an extra star. We have also eaten in restaurants where the "name" has been in the kitchen and we could actually hear them dishing out the orders to the staff:-)

I'd love to go there Sandgrounder. I adore seafood. I'd also like to visit that part of the UK. Never been that far south. For a special meal I'd be happy to pay that especially since we recently had a lunch of 2 starters, 2mains, 1 beer and 1 soda/lime and it was £83 in a no Michelin star restaurant!!!! That was a shocker but it was a treat. One day I'll take a UK holiday and maybe head "down South" and book Rick Stein's place.   :)  :)

Rick Stein also has a traditional fish & chip shop {eat-in and takeaway} in "Padstein". Hilary ate there once and was impressed.

The price isn't bad either. 2 starters, 2 mains and 1 dessert came to £98.00. So, if you ever find yourself in Cornwall, consider giving this place a try, you won't be disappointed.

I can assure you at 98 quid I would be   ;)

Only 6 miles (that's around the corner in Cornish terms      :) )from where we used to live, never tried the restaurant, but have been to the deli and fish and chip shop many times, excellent fare, but, we did know of a better fish and chip shop in St Columb Major (only 5 miles away   ;) ), not sure if it will still be there though.

We have eaten in a lot of places with Chef's names over the door, never a sign of the Chef and even the Chef's in the restaurant have never met the main man.
Jamie Oliver has restaurants all over the place.  He opened one in Aberdeen, but was not there.  A friend of ours and her husband had dinner there, they said it was expensive and the portions where very small. In fact after their dinner they went to the Fish and Chip shop for a carry out.
One of the Roux Bros has his name in an Hotel in Inverness, again, we have stayed a number of times as have our children.  Never seen him once.
I personally think that putting a famous name over the door is a great excuse to increase prices.
Also, I realise the restaurant is not in Calis, but as this is the Calis Beach Forum a lot of people from Calis will read it.
Anyway, I happen to know all the  restaurants in the  Calis area have a Chef straight from Istanbul  :)

Phil went on a Nick Nairn cookery class and we thought it would be NIck Nairn but it was some other Chef.  Nick Nairn also has restaurants that he does not bother going to.  Problem is all these Chefs are too busy around the world making T.V. Programmes to be able to cook at the places where they have their names over the door.

We've eaten there too and I agree it was fabulous! Rick Stein wasn't there though. BTW add alcohol into that bill and it shoots up!

We live very close to The Fat Duck and Heston Blumenthalls 2 gastropubs in nearby Bray. Now we HAVE seen HIM eating in one his pubs, actually at the next table with his daughter. The  Sunday Roast Beef was excellent. (Couldn't afford either the cost or the almost 2 year waiting for a table at the Fat Duck tho and have no desire for snail porridge!  :D

We've been to the fish and chip restaurant in Oban that claims to be the best fish and chips Rick Stein said he has ever had. At £45 for the 4 of us it was not only a quarter of the price of his place, but by his own admission better than his  :)

I thnk when you go to Nick Nairn's cookery school for a lesson, you expect Nick Nairn to teach you.  As for Richard Branson, I would not care if he was Piloting my plane, as he would be me instructing me how to fly.

Rick Stein made The Magpie Cafe in Whitby a massive success by recommending it on one of his programmes.. People used to queue down the road for it every day. We visited for a day last October and was never so dissapointed.. The most tasteless fish and chips ever.. Dont get me started on the awful mushy peas.. Very small unspectacular place and Fish and chips twice with peas £29. 00.   Nearly fainted at the price of The seafood. Very very over rated... He is off my Xmas card List.. lol.

You want to get yourselves up to the Fish & Chip Shop, Oban then Anne - I agree with Rick that it is the best Fish & Chips ever. That is, I agree with Rick Stein, not Rick. Nobody really knows who Rick is apart from the people in Oban who own a rival Fish & Chip shop :D

There is a new restaurant in Winchester bearing the  Rick Stein name, which is one of the least frequented places we have ever seen. I had a wee look at the price list, and very quickly realised why !  Now, Winchester is a pretty well-to-do, up-market city, and if his restaurant there is not attracting custom, it can only be due to the fact that his food is not up the standard expected by the local population , for the price asked !! Just saying, like .

Being in the major white fish port of Europe.. Peterhead, we get the best Fish and of course,  the best Fish and Chip shops ever. When my daughter was at Uni down at Luton.  She hated the fish and chips down there.  I visited her and brought a whole pile of fish and cooked it for her and her house mates. They all said they had never tasted fish like it.

That bad, was it ??  Only joking Jacqui.  ;-)  When I lived in Bo'ness, West Lothian as was, MANY years ago, there was a little fish & chip shop on the Linlithgow Road, Newtown area, ( Teeny Buchanans ), which sold the best ever fish & chips in the world !! They used proper beef dripping in their fryers, and it was changed very regularly. The shop is still there, used it last year, but sadly, the quality of the fish & chips is absolutely dreadful, chips come to the customer in one big lump, all sticking together, not good !!

That reminds me of holidays to my gran's here in Perth Gordy - the fish and chips were cooked in dripping and were absolutely sensational, if a lethal weapon in the long term. Our local chippy today is that same one. The quality is still incredibly high - it is a standard takeaway chip shop but sits at No.3 in Perth Restaurants on Tripadvisor - but the beef dripping long since gone.

In Scotland Fish and Chips is called a Fish Supper and is always made with Haddock.

Our local chippies won sod all but the grubs good, the down side is it's too expensive.

I can have a lovely carvery at a local Inn for less than the cost of a fish n chip takeaway.
