Jehova's witnesses are on the prowl in Calis today.
-
They must know the end of the world is coming soon!
-
I hope not, not had the villa painted yet ;D ;D
-
Yes. They came to my bungalow in Calis this morning. Told them to join the Far Q !!!!!

Maybe there's a global rallying cry - they were out in numbers in Bovey Tracey, Devon yesterday.
-
We live one third of a mile up a farm lane which is has no tarmac and there is no lighting. The benefit is, we don't get any travelling salemen, no cold callers no guisers at Halloween and no carol singers. However, about every five years amazingly, we do get Jehovah's Witnesses, who, if we are out put leaflets through the door and always come back the next day.
P.S Bovey Tracey, The home of Wemyss from the 1930"s. See much of Brian Adams?? (not the singer)
-
Sorry Jacqui - no idea of the other Brian Adams.
Had heard of the pottery though.
Ever the antique dealer, eh?
-
Ah, you're not all potty in Bovey then.
-
They have been to my house, twice! The first time was some weeks ago and they left a leaflet for me to read, the second was the day before yesterday when they came to check that I had read it! They were rather sweet and were not overly pushy.
-
I had a visit once. Showed him into the living room and told him to take a seat. I then asked what do we do now and he said he did not know because no-one had ever invited him in before.

Brian Adams makes modern reproduction Wemyss Ware. He is the Curator of the House of Marbles, Wemyss Pottery in Bovey Tracey.

I specialised in Scottish Pottery and particularly Wemyss Ware. When the Pottery in Kirkcaldy, Fife closed in the 1930's a Czech called Jan Plichta bought the rights and started a pottery in Bovey Travey and brought down some of the Potters from Kirkcaldy. They sucessfully made Wemyss Ware until 1957. However, in the 90's Brian Adams revived Wemyss Ware in Bovey Tracey and started to make it again. Unfortunately, his pieces have little secondary value. The original Scottish Wemyss Ware mades the most money followed by Jan Plichta Pottery.

I know the Wemyss family in Fife. Just saying 8)
-
The Pottery was named after the Wemyss Family who had Wemyss Castle in Kirkcaldy. However, I know a girl in our Bank whoses last name is Wemyss, not as good as your connection though Scunner.. :)

Wow did this thread go off on a tangent!!!! Anyway back to the Jehovah Witlesses. We had a kingdom hall near us so were often on the sunday outreach programme, which was why I always kept a copy of Marx's Capital nearby for when they called, when they pulled out the bible, I pulled out Marx .. it used to perplex them enormously. : :)

Back on track.
I once had a couple in my shop with a little boy who was 6 years old, it was Christmas time. They were browsing and I was speaking to the child. I asked him what Santa was bringing him. The Mother immediately turned on me and said "We are Witnesses, we do not believe in Christmas and getting presents it is a load of rubbish. He will get nothing" She then gave me a lecture about, Christmas, Easter, Birthdays and no presents for any of these occasions. It then gave her an excuse to start to preach to me..
I looked at the boy and he had such a sad look on his little face. I was thinking to myself, he must have felt so left out in his class at school, when all the other children where so excited about Christmas and he was getting nothing.

Maybe he was at a non-Christian school, so Christmas wouldn't bother him ?
-
They should be banned from door to door cold calling, full stop.!! I've seen 3 examples of them working
their way into peoples homes and causing families to split. Parasites.
-
I didn't even know that Jehovah was in court!

The primary schools in the area all have Christmas Parties and Nativity Plays. I had already asked the boy which school he went to and I knew at the time they would be celebrating Christmas as I had a friend whose child was at the same school.
I also think there are many many none Christians who celebrate Christmas and give presents to their children.
I have seen Christmas Trees and decorations in the shops in Fethiye.
-
I work in a non-christian school and we celebrate Christmas. It's not about religious schools. It's more about tradition and culture nowadays and not religion
-
I celebrate the Pagan festival which is at the same time - the Christians
stole adopted it. That is why I bring a tree from the greenwood into the house [Well actually not "the greenwood" but the "Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm" just up the road from us]. Happy Saturnalia one and all!
-
Fast forward to 17th December: Colwyn, his missus and the rest of their followers dancing round his tree in the scud.
You pagans have all the fun ;)

When the Christians adopted the last day of Saturnalia as their Christmas they gained large numbers of Pagan followers but for a long were unable to stamp out the traditional practices that led up to the 25th: "The earliest Christmas holidays were celebrated by drinking, sexual indulgence, singing naked in the streets (a precursor of modern caroling), etc".

Sounds like an average night out at Guven and Carole's ;D

I think to children the Christmas Nativity Play is a lot of fun. Last Christmas at my Granddaughter's Nursery they had the usual Play. The children had a great time and there was a collection for Charity. I am sure a lot of them did not understand what it was all about, but it was heart warming and fun for us all.
My Granddaughter was Mary and her best friend was the Angel Gabriel and a lot of the audience were touched by the affection they showed to each other. Something the J.W's chiildren would, IMHO miss.

Lovely pic's Jacqui, I'm surprised they were allowed, perhaps the PC brigade havn't got that far North yet.
-
Gorgeous pictures! I love the Christmas Nativity, love how the children are so shy but excited, peeping around the audience looking for mummy and nana (dad too if he can be there). The proud families too it's such a happy annual festivity. ;D ;D

My dearest friend is Jehovah and told her 1calis story - she couldn't stop laughing. She said its remarkable the lengths people go to not to answer the door. She recalls one guy standing by the side of his front door (obvs just woken up) naked thinking he was hiding, however he had glass side panels :)
