But it is not just 2.5 lira to the pound so I cannot understand why anyone says this rate.... A beer is around 8 -10 lira, wine the same, between 8 and 10 lira a glass. So I would say that is good, given the exchange rate at 4.5.  What do you pay in the UK for a pint of beer, glass of wine? Obviously dependent on the area but even so.......????

Through economic incompetence, gassy beer is relatively cheap for tourists. Fair enough.

For Turks and expats living a lira life, a beer has quadrupled in price in 10 years. A beer here is around £2.80. Ten years ago however, it was £2.80.

Not only has beer increased, for those living on Lira, but water charges have quadrupled and community charge has more than doubled.

Had UK beer kept up in price increase with beer price increases in Turkey since 2004, my £2.80 beer would now cost me £11.20 a pint today.

But for those of us who don't drink very often we compare things like the price of leeks or cherries.
I swear they're the same price as they were when we arrived 4 years ago.
My son had a little pack of trimmed leeks, 3 in a packet. £1.80 last time I was in the UK. I can get a kilo for 40p. And I get leaves and free mud.
An Efes works out at £1.80 now I think,  cheap for tourists but wouldn't have any impact on whether we moved away or not.

Although we're living in lire I still tend to translate into £'s.
When we arrived 4 years ago our rent equated to £220 a month
Now its £150 a month after yearly inflationary increases.

Yes I prepared to accept that if you eat loads of vegetables and aren't much of a drinker then you can live relatively cheaply. Doesn't sound like me though :D

I've been living in Turkey for 18 years and got used to people coming and going. Only a few stay for good.

I recall, many years ago, former member Starman saying that 80% (according to my memory) of expats leave Turkey after a few years. He was roundly condemned by many on CBF for making up ridiculous statistics and many insisted that they would never leave Turkey. I wonder how many of those that said that are now back in the UK or have moved elsewhere. Starman has gone.

68% of statistics are made-up.
