Slumdog Millionairre Scene in Koca Calis yesterday
« on: March 19, 2015, 07:14:37 AM »
Still struggling to get my head round seeing this yesterday...very close to Telmessos complex in Koca Calis, a few minutes walk away from where they're building the new 5* luxury Sensatori resort. A mum, a dad, 2 children, one in a t shirt and a nappy, sifting through rubbish like the film Slumdog Millionairre.
There must be other jobs? I would literally do anything rather than put my kids through this.
Does anyone know anything about them? Who dumped the rubbish?
Anyone we can speak to, anything we can do to help?
So incredibly sad to see.

Fly tipping in Turkey is a very big problem.  In fact, it seems the common consensus amongst ex-pats is that this one issue is a disgrace that lets the whole country down and tarnishes it's reputation. Also, there is the general problem of litter.  It is the norm for the Turkish just to throw their litter as when they feel like to no regard to what they are doing.  And yet, there is a contradiction here because the Turkish are very proud of their country but at the same time they are damaging it.

I am pretty certain there are laws to prevent this sort of thing.  Not so long ago I witnessed the Jandarma catching someone red handed dumping from a car.  But that must have been an isolated event as there is no concerted effort to tackle this problem which is widespread. The law (like most here) is not being enforced. There are no public dumps for people to dispose of household waste, or for builders dumping their waste material. Even if there were dumps, how can villagers for instance get the waste to the dump, given the distance they would have to travel, as well as the cost.

Everyone has noticed the lack of litter bins.  But even if there were bins, how often would they be emptied?

Families sifting through the rubbish is reminiscent of third world countries and highlights the extremes in Turkish society between the "have's" and the "have not's".

As I understand it, there are no specific laws about fly-tipping in Turkey.
I believe the point was raised at the pre-Mayoral election with Ex-Pats, specifically regarding the rubbish being dumped along the road up to Üzümlü, whereby, I was told that the response was that it was nothing to do with the Belediye, as it was Orman land.
Maybe Eric, Firo or Rimms can tell you more as they were at the meeting, I was not

I remember when someone moved our local rubbish bin 10 feet away from where it usually stood. The locals, however instead of walking to the bin, just dumped their household rubbish where it the bin used to be.

I was at that meeting Hamlet and it was on the list to be dealt with.
I deleted my post on FB as people were saying they thought this was all fine and one lady said it was no where near Sensatori, she obviously thinks 20 minutes walk is a long way.
Regardless of where, ( although seemed very poignant the contrast between wealth and poverty) the sadness in the tiny tots eyes will stay with me.
One person seemed to think it's the start of landfill, so maybe this family were just making to most of what they might find.

It would seem that raking though rubbish is not just for poor people.  We have the bin pickers who come around every day and make their living from picking through rubbish bins and perhaps this is a good way to recycle as they take the bottles etc., to get the money back on them.  However, it is not just the bin pickers that go through the bins.   We put a large umbrella, (which we had used at the pool), in the bin, it had a rip in it.   We then went off to Fethiye.  When we arrived back we noticed that the Farmers at the back of the house had our umbrella and put it over the chicken enclosure to give them some shade from the sun.  Incidentally, the farmers have a huge satellite dish on the roof of their small house and a car sitting at the door.  ;)

The communal open-top rubbish bin is usually just a few metres from our villa in Koca Calis, but I noticed that rubbish was being dumped right outside our villa on the pavement. I was then told by a passer by that the cleaner from a house on the corner opposite (where the owners were absent) was responsible, so I picked up the rubbish and dumped it right back in front of that villa! This continued for two days and then the rubbish was no longer dumped. Maybe she got the message and walked a few extra paces to dump it in the bin.

Ah Linda that brought a little tear to my eye re the sadness in the little child's eyes....
I took a picture last week of what is meant to be one of those small recycling units for plastics by our apartment it was a complete disgrace rubbish just dumped there all ripped open probably by cats etc and I don't think any plastic bottles in sight and a bin about 10 footsteps away!
In our 8 years of going to Turkey we have left loads of stuff for the poor folk at the side of the bin and it has always gone.Last week I left two old sun bed cushions all ripped and they were gone an hour later,on my last day when I clered out my fridge I left the contents by the bin, I have never left food before that had also gone 15 minutes later...
