Fly tipping in Turkey is a very big problem. In fact, it seems the common consensus amongst ex-pats is that this one issue is a disgrace that lets the whole country down and tarnishes it's reputation. Also, there is the general problem of litter. It is the norm for the Turkish just to throw their litter as when they feel like to no regard to what they are doing. And yet, there is a contradiction here because the Turkish are very proud of their country but at the same time they are damaging it.
I am pretty certain there are laws to prevent this sort of thing. Not so long ago I witnessed the Jandarma catching someone red handed dumping from a car. But that must have been an isolated event as there is no concerted effort to tackle this problem which is widespread. The law (like most here) is not being enforced. There are no public dumps for people to dispose of household waste, or for builders dumping their waste material. Even if there were dumps, how can villagers for instance get the waste to the dump, given the distance they would have to travel, as well as the cost.
Everyone has noticed the lack of litter bins. But even if there were bins, how often would they be emptied?
Families sifting through the rubbish is reminiscent of third world countries and highlights the extremes in Turkish society between the "have's" and the "have not's".
