Just bought new phone for 120 lira was told that to unlock a blocked phone costs about the same amount as it has to be sent to Ankara. Was told this by someone we knew who worked in phone repair shop rather than a salesman.

If anyone wants a cheap unlocked, brand new phone (Motorolla C118) there is a guy selling them on ebay for £26. I just got one today - mono screen, one tone, long battery life. To be honest I can leave this in our villa and it won't attract any attention. I'll put the key lock on it anyway so that it's useless unless someone has the numbers.

Noe just for that registering bit.......

Hi.

I had just tried to register my blocked phone but it says the phone is BLACKLISTED!!  I have given the telephone to my friend who is in the UK at the moment and will get my receipt and will try and register this phone at customs when she comes back to Turkey - will this work???

Turkcell do a cheap basic motorola for 109 ytl, if you buy 10 ytl of kontors at the same time you get 1000 free kontors (they are only good for other turkcell mobiles though and they expire after a month ;)). Also if you already have a Turkcell sim you can use it rather than have to change the number.

Sorry to sound dense but have read all through the thread in one word does it seem easier to buy a turkish phone[about £40] when I get out there next week have it registered there and use it and leave it out there for the next time?

Simple answers only please!!

Like Andrew I'm confused. I have virgin pay as you go in the Uk. When we came to Turkey last September it automatically swopped to Turkcell. Does this new ruling mean I have to ditch my mobile and buy a new one when we come out again later this year - hopefully to stay permanently?
What do I have to do to keep my current mobile, it's got all my contacts on it!!

If you maintain your uk sim card there will be no problem other than the very high cost to use the phone. If you install a turkish sim card then the phone must be registered. :)

Just remember that if you use your UK sim card and someone from the UK rings you, it will cost you plenty! Thats why so many members use a Turkish sim whilst in Turkey.

UK sim costs:

Between £1.00 and £1.50 to make a call from a UK mobile.
About £1.00 to receive a call on a UK mobile.

Much cheaper to buy a Turkish mobile and makes/receive calls on that.
