Hi all

I have just joined CBF as we have bought an apartment in Fethiye and are going over to furnish it in April. Feel very nervous as we don't know what to expect and where to go although the estate agent has offered to go shopping with us.  I would love any advice that members have as we are complete novices at it.  Also has anyone got a good management company that we could use?

Jayne

Hi Jayne, welcome to the forum.  We have also recently bought an apartment in Calis, and, like Kevin, really enjoyed the shopping side of it.  We are coming out for two weeks on 21st March (can't wait!) to finish furnishing the apartment, this time without the agent, as we feel a bit more confident!  Have just packed the biggest suitcase you have ever seen with loads of stuff to bring over with us!  No room for clothes!

All the best, Julie

Hi and a very warm welcome to the Forum.  If you can shop on your own in the UK you can do it here! :)

Hi Jayne - welcome and congratulations.
If you are nervous about being understood when shopping then no need to worry. If you are nervous about being ripped off no need to worry either so long as you use common sense and ask around if you are unsure. The worst bit about shopping is that you have a lot to buy in a short time and you don't always have the luxury of going back the next week if you are unsure about curtain patterns etc.  However having to make decisons fairly quickly can help you to stay focussed.
You can use an management comapany and many people do for convenience but those who shop for themselves invarably are glad they did and look back on the experience as one in which they really got to know Turkish people much better, because shop keepers share their love for there country with them. Hope it works out ok for you.

That made perfect sense Stuart, are you ill?  ;)

It's fundamentally important to get out there, get stuck in and get bartering.

What is this nonsense about personal shoppers? Sure, if you can't come - all agents (including ourselves) will do your furniture purchasing for you. But why if you are coming would you do that?

If we let people choose our furniture, decide where is the best place to eat, choose from the menu for us, tell us which taxi driver to use, then CBF is finished.

It is precisely the tales of adventure, misunderstanding, negotiation, unexpected kindness and stupidity that make our forum a nest of fantastic anecdotes.

Apart from that, what I really can never grasp is that as a nation, we move around from property to property, dragging our possessions with us - then when we invest in our dream home abroad, we totally miss the opportunity of the blank canvas - possibly our first ever?

I paid over the odds for many things, I negotiated great deals on others, I drank cay for hours and saved 20p on a £80 rug, but I did it all and loved the stories it gave me to tell.

Personal shoppers? Second only to the "professional snaggers" I read about recently.

Your mission, if you choose to accept, is to go out, furnish your apartment through trial and error, and come back and tell us all the experiences and stories you collected along the way.

Thank you all for welcoming me and all your helpful comments.  We have decided to go on our own to do our shopping and after looking at other comments on the site about furniture shopping, we will be going to Eren Spot as they seem to have helped a lot of people.  Hopefully we will be able to get it all in one place.

I must say the site and everyone on it seems really helpful and I hope that I can contribute when we have some experiences.
