There has been widespread speculation on the motive behind the YouTube cyber-raid that closed down the site for two hours and interrupting the viewing of an estimated 2.34 million surfers.
Some industry commentators are pointing at involvement of the fanatical Vegetable Rights lobby who are protesting the about the barbaric maltreatment of potatoes in the infamous Cadbury Smash adverts that have recently gained re-newed popularity. Other sources say far more likely raiders are the hardliners in the Born Again Blues movement who have taken exception to the MikeA rendition of "Stormy Monday".
A YouTube spokesperson said that they had noted a very large increase in interest in these two web pages. Their suspicions were aroused by the number of referrals the pages were getting from a website with connections to South Western Turkey. YouTube had received a transAtlantic phonecall from a very senior member of Britain's secret police - codenamed Plantpot. Unfortunately there was interference on the line, or perhaps the secret agent was being deliberately incoherent, so not all the message was clear. But the gist was that the Turkish connection is part of the operation of an evil international mastermind called Scammer (or something like that) who is the leader of a drug smuggling gang (but it might have been "glove smuggling") known for Mediterranean child trafficking (or charging full price for children). Anyway, he is clearly a malevolent influence in this troubled part of the world - that wasn't troubled until he got there - and is also reputed to be the inspiration for the villain in the Austin Powers movie with the rude name.
Rotters' Special Istanbul Correspondent, the enigmatically shadowy "Starman", was unavailable for comment. A close colleague suggested he was probably "Drinking that bloody communist beer again down at the Tapps Brewery". [Rotters is examining the political leanings, and expense accounts, of its Special Correspondent].
