We're due out in about 6 wks- can't wait. My other half thinks it will be best to bring just English pounds with us and either change it once we arrive or pay for everything with our english money. Will this work and what's the exchange rate like at the moment in Calis?

We do the same, just take enough for your first day and take some English to change there, but then use a Nationwide Flexaccount debit card which gives you a good rate and doesn't charge for taking cash out of the machines abroad.
