Wood seal
« on: August 20, 2008, 21:58:08 PM »
Hi,

I hope someone can help me, I have a wooden rail on my outside terrace that seeps sap and is a pain as the sap sticks to everything. I have tried sanding it down and applying varnish but the sap still bursts through. Can anyone recommend a good sealant, the turkish name for it and where I can buy it in the Fethiye area.

Jack

Hi Jack, I'm no expert but I don't think you will find a sealant that will keep stuff in. Keeping it out is easy. However the fresh wood cannot produce resin forever. In the Turkish climate it should very quickly exhaust itself and then you can seal it with any PU or oil based sealant as required. I bet Scunner could help on this.

Well not really, if you buy an oil platform or build a football stadium I'd be far more useful :D

Knotting is used to prevent sap coming from wood knots so that would be a start as an all over treatment. Local wood does however seem to generally be far more sappy (is that a word?) than most in the UK. The trouble with varnishes is that being clear they lack any great pigmentation so they break down easily. Wood stains are far more sensible.

i think it s because they dont give the time for the wood to dry out here
before they use it.
i have the same problem with a piece of timber
you can only wait for the resin to come out (sugars in wood)
keep scraping it off eventually it will stop
use a wood stain not varnish as this seals in moisture, wood needs to breathe

Yes I agree with Doll
Just let it breath.
The problem was the wood was not ready to be used. But they did.

Thanks everyone, the offending bit of timber is 4 years old, I hope it extinguishes its supply of resin soon, just have to keep on scrapping.
