Can someone tell me what this is all about,
millions of normally sane adults running imaginary farms with imaginary animals?

why?

It is an extension of Yoville, where you can have a virtual you, a virtual home (or more than one if you work hard) a virtual job and a virtual social life.
Saddo that I am, I am enjoying the opportunity to have a free say in the decor of my home(s) for the first time ever.  No one to say, I don't like that, can I have that, no we can't, orange does not go with purple etc.   Lovely,.
Of course, if ever they award me a virtual husband and virtual kids and five virtual sisters to boss me around, I will be off!

It's been sold he is desperate to try and catch up to my level. ;):D
No apologies for being a fan, I'm not bored, I'm not sad but find it good fun.
Don't knock it till you have tried it.
Better than sitting in a bar watching football IMO.: :)
