So what's the problem? You can get them cheap and they save you money.

What's wrong with them is

A very narrow spectrum band.
A constant flicker which can cause fits in epileptics.
Slow to reach maximum brightness.

As a life long maker of Tiffany lamps I strongly object to these bulbs as they bleach the colour out of everything and make glass look like plastic. fortunately the technology behind LEDs will come to the rescue and rid us of this blight. 8)

I feel faint.  [xx(]
I agree with mike A
As an epileptic I won`t use "energy saving" lightbulbs in our Lounge or Dining Room as they are worse than fluorescent tubes for bringing on a seizure.

Expensive but you can get completely flicker free ones now - and you can use them with dimmers:

The jury's still out on the alleged flicker free bulbs and they still have narrow spectrum problems.

If they charged me £12 quid, i'd have a fit.   :)
Colwyn. You can still get the gas mantles.I fitted gas wall lamps to a period refurbishment job.I think they still use them on the stations on the Severn Valley Railway too.I saw a first today.A van with a warning sign on the back."warning, sodium lamps inside".??
