Sovalye Island
« on: September 18, 2009, 11:23:15 AM »
Spent one of our best afternoons of our holiday on Sovalye Island on Wednesday. Was'nt sure how to get there but had saw something on CBF saying along the harbour at Fethiye there was a boat service running to the Island & back. Found it no problem, turn right coming off the Calis water taxi and several hundred yards along is a small sign offering trips for 6YTL. We got the noon boat over having bought a picnic lunch at Carrefour as we were not sure exactly what was on the Island. After a small diversion to offload some machine parts & gas bottles to a freighter anchored in the bay!!!! (all part of the fun I suppose) we arrived safely and asked for our return trip to be at 15:30 hrs. There was also the choice of a 19:30 hrs return if you wanted it. We did'nt do to much exploring as it was extremely hot that day but found a small pebbly beach that was totally deserted, with a nice shady spot beneath a tree and had a lovely picnic lunch. The water was lovely & warm & very clear and I spent a good hour or more doing the best snorkelling I have done so far in Turkey. Had another short walk checking out some of the lovely homes on the Island before returning to the jetty for our trip home. The boat was waiting for us already and we returned to Fethiye very happy and relaxed. A great afternoon and a lovely place to visit!

Thanks TGAR, I was looking to try a bit of scuba diving but didn't feel good about leaving SWMBO on her own incase she found another jewellers :o. Now I can talk her into lazing on the beach while I go snorkelling. Which part of the island did you find the great spot to snorkel?

Albie, just walk off the jetty and follow the path to the left which takes you slightly inland. About a third of a mile down the path not far after a stone arch the path turns back in towards the beach and follow that until you come out on the beach itself. Not too far to walk although it was very hot that day. The beach sweeps around towards some villas but we stayed away from them so we could have a spot to ourselves, however we saw nobody at all. As I said the beach is very pebbly but once in the water a few feet out the bottom is actually sandy.Just a lovely little spot but I'm sure there are many more around the Island we just never got round to checking them out. Maybe next time we visit we may explore a little further as I believe there is a cafe or restaurant somewhere. Hope you enjot it!!
