Palm Trees

Such a shame this awful disease that attacks Palm trees has reached us here in Calis.We had a beautiful one on our complex and it looked fine till this morning when the centre has just totally collapsed.Such a sad sight and i fear for the others in the vicinity as the disease spreads rapidly.

Mavis, there is another thread running about this subject somewhere. I agree with you and I don't think people have latched on to just how serious this is. I understand that there is no real solution to eradicating the flying beetle that is causing this problem and potentially, every palm tree in the resort will be killed in a very short space of time. Just think about how bare the prom would look with all of the palm trees gone.

We had a lovely 15 year old palm tree in the garden, from spotting the tree had been attacked to it being killed completely was about 3 weeks.

Just found the other thread;

I dropped a line to Pat at Fethiye Times and got this really nice and helpful reply;

Hi George

Our editor has forwarded your e-mail about red palm beetle, rhynchophorus ferrugineus, and asked me to reply.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhynchophorus_ferrugineus

The above link takes you to the Wikipedia entry for this beetle which includes suggestions for control.  I have also looked at the Calis Beach Forum thread which you mention and you should take the advice of the contributor from the Ilce Tarim Mudurlugu (Regional Minsitry of Agriculture office) who correctly identifies the beetle and, if you go to the office, will be able to give you the name of the insecticide needed to kill it.  As you will know if you read Fethiye Times, you now need a prescription (free of charge) to obtain insecticides and you should also be able to get such a prescription from the Ilce Tarim office - near the Flamingo cafe on the bay road.

If publicly planted palms are under threat the Council will get the Ilce Tarim people to act.

Hope this is helpful.

Best wishes.

Being no expert, I would suggest the insecticide will not kill your tree but might prevent the problem. Like a flu jab, just do it.

We had the Ministry of agriculture people to our place in October after losing several trees.The said it would cost 160ytl per month for treatment,they did not know how many treatments neither could they say that it would definitely work.I researched the subject and found that infected cultivated palms from the middle east hd been sold all over the world hence the epidemic in Spin,Egypt,Turkey and even China !The problem is 3 fold in that a bug flies to your plan,lays eggs which hatch into larvae which then burrow into the centre eating the soft core,the tee then rots and collapses.There is not one single effective treatment to cope with the bug,the eggs and the larvae which are obviously at different stages of growth.Once you see the bug your plants are basically kaput!The dvice  I was given was take trees out and burn them and replant trees other than palms !
