Taking my dog back to the UK
« on: January 02, 2010, 10:17:43 AM »
Do you know anyone who has taken their dog back to the UK?  We brought Chiglie over from the UK but for many reasons we want to take him back.  i am trying to gather all the info i can.  i have found out what i need to do at this end (Turkey). i have been told that we can go to Rhodes, stay there for six months, register Chigs with a vet, get his pet passport then fly home to the UK.  This is to avoid Chiglie having to go into quarantine for six months.  is anyone able to help, please.

You can stay in any EU country and register him with a local vet and then 6 months later take him into the UK with a pet passport. So you could rent France, Italy anywhere as long as it's an EU member.
I have also heard of French families taking pets in for ex pats if you can't stay with him. They are treated as a family pet so again better than quarantine for 6 months.
Europes not a problem as long as you follow guidelines it's just that little stretch of water...so needless if the pet is fully jabbed and healthy.[:(!]
Good luck

Thanks for that very useful information but do you know if we could fly from Dalaman to an EU country.  i mentioned Rhodes earlier as i thought we could get the ferry there but am still trying to find out the requirements for that country ie can we just walk off with Chiglie or does he have to be shipped in a crate?
i have been on the Defra website and many others.

If you fly he'll have to be caged. I cannot see why you couldn't import him to an EU country but you need to check the countries rules and I would think your vet here could find that out.
Alternative way of getting to Rhodes is to ferry from Marmaris and then he'd walk on and off with all the correct paperwork.
Use your vet for Rhodes requirements.
Good luck

To get your dog into Greece is not difficult as the presentation of a Rabies certificate is sufficient. To comply with new EU  legislation  a minimum of 21 days must have passed since the vaccination was given. It is also recommended to have a letter support from your local Turkish vet. I would suggest that you had a blood test done in Turkey before you start your journey just to ensure the appropriate antibodies are into the dogs bloodstream. Apologies about the lack of correct medical terms.

Although I totally agree with the UK government and they have been successful in keeping rabies out of the Uk the PET passport rules can be silly. There is as much rabies or probably more in the rest of the EU than there is in Turkey. If you have a rabies blood test done in Turkey the sample is actually sent to an EU approved lab in Instanbul.

I know of one person who took his dogs to the UK by taking them to Rhodes and registered with a vet. Blood samples were taken and sent off. He returned to Turkey with his dogs and sat out the 6 months here. Then he took them back to Rhodes got them treated for tapeworm and flew them to the UK.  I do not condone this course of action but it is a devious way of bypassing the rules. Eventually the EU will cotton on and tighten the law up to make it even more difficult and more expensive to get a dog into the EU.

Sorry my information is wrong to take your dog to Greece the following has to be complied with.

The standard requirements for bringing a pet into Greece are that your pet must be micro chipped and registered, and must have had a rabies vaccination within the last 12 months, but more than 30 days ago.

I do not know about the ferries from Turkey to Greece but the ones from Europe to Greece actually encourage taking pets and have kennel facilities. One company I have heard of will let you walk your pet around the boat but you are not allowed to take the dog inside.

Many thanks for all your help.  For any people who may find themselves in our situation, this is what i now know for fact;
-The dog must be microchipped
-One month after the Rabies vaccination the dog must have a rabies blood test.
-if the blood test is ok, so we have been told, we have to wait a further three months before we can take our dog to an EU country.
-A cartificate from Fethiye Beledier is required called 'Certificate of Origin'.
-All documents have to be taken to the Fethiye Ministry of Agriculture, at least 24 hours before leaving and they will provide the Certificate of Exportation.
-The dog has to be in a crate on the ferry to Rhodes.
Once again, thank you for your help.  Now for my next question.
Does anyone know of a good website showing towns, maps and rental properties on Rhodes.

Try talking to pixie. She just moved back to UK and took her dog with her. She knows all about it. I would highly recommend you get help from a local too.
