Personally I would rather be safe than sorry and will be having the recommended jabs when I come to Turkey this year.
I know the jabs are not compulsory, but they are recommended for people who have certain complaints. It is of course your own choice to.
I also heard that should you ignore the recommendations on jabs it could invalidate your travel insurance should you need to make a claim on health issues.

I have been on at least twenty trips to Turkey now never had one jab and have never caught anything and trust me I am a worrier where health is concerned! I thought a tetnus jab lasted up to ten years, against getting the virus or whatever it is, is it something that you catch from soil?

I would think most Brits have already had the Tetanus shot, it seems compulsory for every little scratch now days.  ;)

I was told that you should not have more than 6 or 7 tetanus injections in your lifetime. I can't remember why though.

If you have too many injections every time you have a drink of water you end up behaving like a watering can!
Oh and yes we did have our innoculations for Turkey. We were advised to by our GP so we did!

So after seeing that list for Turkey, what innoculations are 'advised' for a trip to the UK?

Diptheria and Hepatitis A are contracted as a result of poor sanitation conditions usually. In Russia at the end of the 1980's thousands and thousands of people died of Diptheria as a result of the immunisation's not being carried on when the government collapsed. In Britain Diptheria was common before immunisation was introduced. The reason Diptheria,Whooping cough,Measles and Polio among other illnesses have been eradicated in Britainis because we have the injections to stop them given to us when we are a few months  old.

Tetanus jabs usually are usually every few years, your doctor would have records of when you need one.

We were advised to have them for our first trip in the 80's when it wasnt a number one holiday destination- and after that havent bothered! If we were thinking of taking a trip into the 'hinterland' then maybe but not a mediterranean tourist resort!

Wow, there were a lot emails in my inbox this morning!

Daffodil, out of interest are you a nurse? Because you've given similar advice that a friend who is a nurse has given me.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm still trying to decide. It's difficult because of the needles thing, and at the same time I wouldn't want to get ill.
 :)

I have been involved in healthcare at one time and am also a mother and grandmother. I am also terrified of the dentist so understand that you are nervous. Tetanus shots are really needed all the time in any country, usually every ten years is normal. It really is for you decide what is right for you. You have access to many sites on the computer so why not read up on Hep A and Diptheria. Then you can make an informed decision. :)

Speaking personally I have been coming to Fethiye for nearly twenty years and now live here. I have never heard of anyone contracting Hep A or Diptheria or Tetanus here but would not like to advise anyone not to be vaccinated.
