I'm going to stick my £'s into ING Orange account up to the max I'm covered for if they collapse for any reason, 10% is too good to miss out on, even if it's for a short term. The rest will be spread round the banks, again up to the max compensation level, I've worked too hard to risk putting it all with 1 bank to gain an extra 1% or so in interest.

Hsbc is a worldwide bank and is probably safer than most.
Nicola, if Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain all go 'down the pan'
We will all be 'down the pan'  It is too painfull to consider :-\

not yet Tel  ;)

What I was trying to get at is that while we are all running around worrying about Finans if things go t&ts up in Europe all the other banks that some of us may have turned to could pose just as big if not greater risk.

In the past I chose Turkish banks because they are better regulated. I found when doing research their web sites more open about things like interest rates too.

I am on the verge of opening an Orange account because I can get a much better deal for my money on a number of counts but primarily because its an instant access current account a fact that had alluded me until I read the Hurriyet article I posted in the Orange topic.

In other words I can get my hands on my money straight away without having to forfeit a months interest. Plus no charges and with an excellent (for now) interest rate.

However I am now as concerned about all banks as I am about Finans and wondered if anyone else felt the same.

Unless its changed HSBC banks in different countries are sort of like franchaises. When the Argentinian economy went "down the pan" people with money in the Argentinia HSBC account were affected just like everyone else.

I agree with you that we are all in big trouble if defaults and bail outs continue to be the order of the day.

Hsbc is the same bank whichever country you are in, so nobody would have lost any of their money in Argentina. They have more capital than all the other UK banks put together. I am not saying 'no risk' but definately 'less risk'

The bank manager at HSBC Fethiye told me three years ago his bank had nothing to do with my HSBC bank in the UK.

They are Hsbc Turkey and Hsbc UK. They are the same bank but their operations are seperate.

Correct Andy, different banking regulations totally run under the host country's banking rules and regs. 8)
