As a lighter hearted follow up to the Indian call centre topic...

Not long after moving to Scotland we visited a a local garage to look at a car. Steph and I looked around it and as it was locked I said I'd go in and ask someone for the keys. Inside I found an empty office so went through to the workshop area, and found a man with his head under the bonnet hard at work. I asked for the keys and he told me in decent English but with a strong Polish accent that I was welcome to look with the keys but he was the mechanic, the boss was away for his lunch.

I returned to Steph and we had a good look inside the car. Then I saw another car, a totally impractical Alfa 2 seater so we went to look round that. Steph said that I might as well sit in it, even though we wouldn't be buying it - and said she'd go and ask for the keys.

When she came back she clearly had not understood the mechanic too well. "I didn't really have a clue what that bloke was saying to me" she explained. "I think he must be from Glasgow".

I was born and brought up in Aberdeen, but have difficulty understanding some people from Fraserburgh or Peterhead. :)

when I was giving birth to Emily 21 years ago a large West Indian midwife was in with me taking care of us. As a conraction came she told me to "hold on to your ties" - I looked around the bed and backwards at the headbord to find the ties, assuming I needed to hold on to them help with the pushing to get the baby out. She came over to me and grabbed onto my hands and slapped them on my thighs "hold on to our ties" she repeated - the penny dropped!

Try having a surname like "Spike" taking the dog to the vet, being asked by the receptionist for your name saying "Spike" and she replies "No not the dogs name your name!"
Did she go red!!!!!!

I thought my cousin was rambling on about a new Indian restaurant when I asked her how long she'd had to wait at outpatients for something. She said "it took oor an oor". She really meant she'd had to wait slightly long than an hour! And we both live in the same town!!!

I work in a call centre (in the UK!), and find it really hard to understand very strong Sottish accents-no offence intended!
But saying that, I come from Manchester, and frequently get asked if I come from Liverpool! :D

We were in an indian restaurant about 15 years ago, we ordered a takeaway and the guy took our order and then asked if we wanted any shells. We had been eating curries for years but had never been very adventurous but only a few weeks before when we were in Ayr having an indian and we were served loads of things that we had never tasted before. Anyway we looked at each other and both answered no to the shells question. I was thinking it would be pasta shells added to the curry or something to do with fish. But the guy taking the order asked us again did we want the shells and we are both thinking he's not understanding us.... This went on for a few minutes, I don't know how many different ways we tried to get through to him we didn't want the shells. Finally the guy started writing on his notepad, he wrote two initials. So all the time he wasn't asking if we wanted any shells, he wanted our initials . We both cried with laughter after he disappeared. :-\
