16th Century Navigational Map.

I thought this picture may interest the Turkish history buffs on the CBF.

This is part of Jacopo Russo's Navigational Map which is on display at Birmingham's own Museum & Art gallery. I've probably walked past the glass case containing the map hundreds of times over the years and never thought anything of it.

The map was made in Sicily back in the 16th Century and the ink was drawn onto vellum (sheep skin).

Fethiye has gone through a few name changes over it's sometimes turbulent history... Telmessos and Megri to name a couple but on this map you will see it as Marri.

...well I think it's interesting anyway :D:D

Megri (pronounced merri) and marri are similar and the f in fatalia would have been pronounced s as in rodaf (rodos)

Fascinating. It must have been drawn around the time that Sulemein the Magnificent invaded Rhodes from Marmaris or Sisro.
